Arago and Fresnel's paper: pp. 288-306.

First appearance of this seminal paper in which Arago and Fresnel described the experiments which demonstrated that light vibrates transversely to its direction of forward movement."In a further letter to Arago dated 29 April 1818 Young recurred to the subject of transverse vibrations comparing light to the undulations of a cord agitated by one of its extremities. This letter was shown by Arago to Fresnel who at once saw that it presented the true explanation of the non-interference of beams polarised in perpendicular planes and that the latter effect could even be made the basis of a proof of the correctness of Young's hypothesis; for if the vibration of each beam be supposed resolved into three components one along the ray and the other two at right angles to it it is obvious from the Arago-Fresnel experiment that the components in the direction of the ray must vanish; in other words THAT THE VIBRATIONS WHICH CONSTITUTE LIGHT ARE EXECUTED IN THE WAVE-FRONT." Approximately 75 pages. "Brings together for the first time thirty-eight stunning, original Canadian maps - many of them national treasures - and the fascinating stories of the explorers and cartographers who made them. From Gastaldi's woodcut map of 1556 in which monsters roam the sea, through Champlain's 1612 collage map of Canada's bounty, to Sanson's foundation map of 1656 - the first to show all five Great Lakes - this superb 'atlas' takes the modern navigator on a voyage of rediscovery to Canada's beginnings, beginnings not only in strength and adventure but also in humanity and art. Charts a compelling route to the nation's past." - from dust jacket. Book clean and unmarked with light wear to navy cloth boards. Price clipped dust jacket bears two closed tears and average wear. 290 pages. Most extant histories of obstetrics have been written by the profession - and stress the continuity and benefits of professional development - or by its critics, who stress the political maneuvering that eliminated the traditional female midwife in favor of a "medicalizing" of pregnancy and childbirth disadvantageous to women. In this controversial work, a third history of obstetrics is presented that is in the history of Michel Foucault's "histories that are not history." He uses the archive of the profession to expose and elaborate the deployment of obstetrical power in the post World War II period. Usual library markings with only a rubber stamp to the top edge visible externally. Front endpaper missing. Moderate wear. Few light pencil markings else clean. Binding intact. Good working copy.
