Erstmals liegen die 1725 von Sebastiano Giannini publizierten Stichwerke mit den von Francesco Borromini und Virgilio Spada 1647 verfassten Texten in deutscher Übersetzung vor. Im Jahre 1725 veröffentlichte der in Rom lebende Kupferstecher und Verleger Sebastiano Giannini das architektonische Werk von Francesco Borromini mit 67 Kupfertafeln in denen der Gebäudekomplex des Oratorio dei Filippini in Rom dargestellt war. Gianninis Stiche liefern eine fast vollständige Plandarstellung des Gebäudekomplexes. Sie gehen zum Teil auf seine eigenen Bauaufnahmen zurück zum Teil reproduzieren sie Zeichnungen Borrominis die heute – bis auf eine Ausnahme – verloren sind. Der von Virgilio Spada redigierte Text Francesco Borrominis ist eine der ausführlichsten und systematischsten Beschreibungen eines Gebäudes die je verfasst wurde. Francesco Borromini è diventato negli ultimi decenni una delle figure centrali nel dibattito sulla storia dell'architettura occidentale, e al suo profilo di artista e alle sue opere sono stati dedicati libri, convegni, un numero impressionante di saggi e persino diversi romanzi ispirati alla sua vita e alla rivalità rispetto a Bernini. Nato a Bissone, sulle sponde del lago di Lugano, nel 1599, Borromini trascorre la sua adolescenza a Milano iniziando la sua formazione intellettuale nel clima creativo della città borromaica. Giunto a Roma intorno ai vent'anni, inizia a lavorare nella Fabbrica di San Pietro come scarpellino e incontra Carlo Maderno, suo lontano parente, che ne scopre le doti di architetto avvalendosi della sua collaborazione nella chiesa di Sant'Andrea della Valle. Alla morte del Maderno Bernini lo sceglie come collaboratore per il baldacchino di San Pietro e per il palazzo Barberini, fino a che, nel 1636, avviene tra i due una rottura che segna l'inizio di una rivalità destinata a diventare leggendaria. Le sue opere principali sono le chiese di San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, di Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza, di Santa Maria dei Sette Dolori e di Sant'Andrea delle Fratte e gli interventi nei palazzi Falconieri, Giustiniani, Carpegna e di Propaganda Fide. Innocenzo X, nell'imminenza del giubileo del 1650, gli affida l'incarico più importante della sua vita, il restauro della costantiniana basilica lateranense. Nonostante il valore e il significato di questo restauro, che conserva come reliquie le mura della basilica paleocristiana, Borromini rimane insoddisfatto per la mancata realizzazione della volta che aveva progettato. Negli ultimi anni della sua vita il lavoro diminuisce e l'architetto, pur realizzando ancora dei capolavori come il campanile e la cupola di Sant'Andrea delle Fratte, la cappella dei Re Magi e la facciata del palazzo di Propaganda Fide, diventa sempre più malinconico e inquieto fino al gesto estremo del suicidio avvenuto nel 1667, che non gli impedisce però, prima di morire, di ravvedersi e di raccontare il tragico evento in una drammatica confessione rilasciata al suo medico, messa in musica da due musicisti contemporanei, Salvatore Sciarrino e Peter Maxwell Davies.
