19731366New Jersey: Noyes Press 1973. First American edition. Hardcover. Good/poor. Good hardcover 1st US edition in a poor dustjacket. The book is good with small tears to the paper the spine tips and bumps to the upper corners. Previous owner's name and sticker to the top of the front free-endpaper appears to be the only writing in the book. 4 small glue dots to the title page where a newspaper article appears to have been removed. Binding is solid but the gatherings are not tight and the book lays open easily. The jacket is truly poor with large tears chips crinkling and soil. Buy this copy for the book and hide that jacket away in a drawer somewhere. Unpaginated but with 149 full page black and white plates. <br/><br/> Noyes Press hardcover

Born In Springfield Ohio Conway Griffith1863-1924 Is Known For Landscape And Some Marine Painting. He Was Raised In A Cultured Family And Both He And His Brother Armand Harrold Conway Became Recognized Artists. At Age 17 Conway Went To New York City And Became A Student Of William Merritt Chase And Wayne Gifford And Then For Several Years He Taught A Special Method Of China Painting On The Faculty At The Cincinnati School Of Design. However Problems With His Health Took Him West In The 1890S. In Denver Where He Lived On A Cattle Ranch He Studied Landscape Painting And Also Made Trips To Mexico And California In 1898 Moving To Southern California Permanently In 1904. He First Lived On Catalina Island Later Moving To Laguna Beach Where He Was A Member Of The Laguna Beach Art Association. Exhibition At The Steckel Gallery In 1912. Dust jacket in clear protector. <br>The medals catalogued and reproduced in the present volume were assembled by Gustave Dreyfus 1837-1914 an enthusiastic French collector of impeccable taste. Recognized as one of the finest private collections of Renaissance medals in existence they were purchased by the Kress Foundation and given to the National Gallery of Art Washington D.C. in 1957. The collection is remarkable for the range it covers as well as for the superb quality of the single medals it contains. The largest part consists of Italian medals of the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries; important medals from France Germany and the Low Countries are also included as well as a few coins. There are many fine examples of the medallic art of Pisanello Niccolò Fiorentino and his school Leoni Durpé Hagenauer and Gebel.
