Anlass zu der vorliegenden Untersuchung ist der widerspruchliche Kenntnisstand zum Werk des spatgotischen Bildschnitzers Benedikt Dreyer. Mit profundem psychologischem Durchdringungsvermogen kreierte der Lubecker Kunstler kurz vor Einfuhrung der Reformation einen neuen Heiligentypus, dessen Hauptmerkmal eine expressiv gesteigerte Ausstrahlungskraft war. Ausgehend vom Antoniusretabel (heute im St. Annen-Museum in Lubeck), dem einzigen fur Dreyer archivalisch verburgten Bildwerk, wird das ?uvre des Bildschnitzers einer kritischen Betrachtung unterzogen und das Besondere seiner Figurenkonzeption und seiner Schnitztechnik herausgearbeitet. Der Umgang mit kunstlerischen Vorbildern und Einflussen wird eingehend thematisiert. Ausfuhrlich wird auch die Frage nach den Auftraggebern der Kunstwerke behandelt, wobei insbesondere deren humanistisch gepragter Bildungshintergrund Berucksichtigung findet. For De Bruyckere they symbolize not only warmth and shelter, but also vulnerability and fear. Fear that makes people crawl under blankets and vulnerability in situations related to cold, illness, disaster and war. They are the images-from Somalia, Ruanda or Kosovo-which the media show us every day: images from hotbeds of violence which cause the population to flee, to hide or to shiver from cold. Victims are wrapped in blankets. The suffering is covered. In De Bruyckere's studio, such newspaper photographs are present as quiet moments among the day-to-day memoranda. They are often images in which sadness and beauty seem to compete for attention

Flemish artist Berlin De Bruyckere frequently uses material such as wax, wood, wool, horse skin and hair to produce sculptures and drawings that refer to the body's fragility, to suffering and desire. The new works the artist will show in Istanbul include "-009-, 2011-2012" and a new series entitled "The Wound". As part of the exhibition, two new works will be presented at the Çukurcuma Hamam. This space was included as an exhibition venue at the artist's request, who wished to engage her work in a dialogue with the local context and architectural heritage. This additional exhibition site also refers to the idea of cleansing the body, rubbing off the extra layer of skin, which in a sense implies moulting. Includes Nadar's hermaphrodite photographs in 1861 and examples from a rare Ottoman medical album which De Bruyckere has discovered in a library in Istanbul etc.
