Gebonden, zwart linnen met goudopdruk, geillustreerde stofomslag, 250 x 320mm., 298pp., prachtig, zeer rijk geillustreerd in kleur. ISBN 9789058264855. De schilderijen van de Vlaamse primitieven krijgen een ereplaats in de internationale musea. De meerstemmige hemelse muziek van de Vlaamse polyfonisten staat op het hoofdprogramma van drukbijgewoonde concerten. Kastelen in Europa pronken met de schitterende Vlaamse wandtapijten??¦ Deze hoogtepunten uit de Bourgondische periode zijn wereldbefaamd en alom bekend. Maar naast schilders, wevers en musici waren nog andere ambachtslieden actief: beeldsnijders, metselrijsnijders, schrijnwerkers, tafereelmakers, stoffeerders en vergulders. In hun ateliers onder meer te Brussel, te Mechelen en te Antwerpen bouwden ze samen minutieus aan altaarstukken of retabels. Die werden vanuit de Bourgondische Nederlanden per schip en over land naar alle uithoeken van Europa vervoerd. Vlaamse retabels. Een internationale reis langs laatmiddeleeuws beeldsnijwerk van de kunsthistorici Ria De Boodt en Ulrich Schafer, specialisten terzake, is zonder meer een standaardwerk over deze meesterwerken. Het toont de retabels zoals u ze nog nooit eerder zag. Johan Geleyns, topfotograaf gespecialiseerd in kunstopnames, reisde door Vlaanderen en het buitenland om met de meest geavanceerde apparatuur deze kunstwerken in al hun pracht vast te leggen. De combinatie van de boeiende tekst en de verbluffende illustraties zorgen voor een sensationeel lees- en kijkavontuur. Een niet te missen geschenkboek.

Vlaamse retabels worden in de 15de en de eerste helft 16de eeuw niet alleen gemaakt voor de inlandse markt, maar hun faam is zo groot dat ze een belangrijk exportprodukt worden en nu nog in heel Europa en zelfs daarbuiten worden teruggevonden. Het zijn meesterwerken van technisch vakmanschap, niet in het minst door de strenge kwaliteitscontrole van de ambachten en door een lange beeldsnij- en schilderstraditie. Van de honderden toen gemaakte retabels is maar een fractie bewaard. Dit cahier gidst u langs de vijftig retabels, die nu nog in Belgische monumenten opgesteld staan.
