New English Paperback. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 112 p., ills. Thresholds.= Esikler. [Exhibition catalogue]. 16 May - 29 July 2018. Translated into English by Süreyyya Evren. Curated by Mine Haydaroglu. Thresholds is an ongoing touring exhibition that restages the world's first major exhibition of photography. Visitors travel back in time to 1839, when British scientist William Henry Fox Talbot first presented his photographic prints to the public at King Edward's School in Birmingham. The experience is a fully immersive portal to the past; visitors can walk freely throughout a digitally reconstructed room, and are able to touch the bespoke vitrines, fixtures and mouldings; even the heat and scent of a coal fire is recreated. Infrared sensors track visitors movements, creating ghostly avatars that indicate their position and enhance the feeling of travelling through time. Collishaw has also created a soundscape to accompany the exhibition: the demonstrations of the Chartist protesters who rioted in 1839 on the streets of Birmingham, and who can be glimpsed through the digital windows.

Thomas Schütte is a catalog of works by this contemporary German artist. Schütte studied under Gerhard Richter, Benjamin Buchloh, and Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Düsseldorf Academy in the 1970s. He comes from that strong conceptual background, but as his career matured the emotional content of his work evolved and became much more potent. Schütte's work is incredibly eclectic: ceramic figures, architectural models, drawings, outdoor sculptures, photographs, and installations. A recent work, Big Spirits (1996), is a collection of larger-than-life-size aluminum figures that seem to be morphing before one's eyes. They are at once ghost, human, and machine. Also riveting is The Innocents (1994), a series of photographs of the heads of handmade figurines, and United Enemies, A Play in Ten Scenes (1993)--offset lithographs, also of figurines wrapped in Schütte's clothes. His watercolors are beautiful, ranging from drawings of fruit to portraits of women. Whatever the project, Schütte is tapped in to a particular humanity. Included in the book are essays by Julian Heynen and Angela Vettese, an interview with James Lingwood, and an essay by Roman philosopher Seneca, chosen by the artist. There is also a story by Schütte--printed in English for the first time. — Testi: Cooke Lynne, Schütte Thomas et al. F.to: 28x24; pagg. 160; 174 COL 4 bicromie 6 BN; rileg. rigida con sovracoperta. Hardcover, Couverture reliee sous jaquette, HB, 270 x 205 mm, 192 p, 100 illustrations, E/ F edition. ISBN 9789461615428.
