RARE book with 41 plates by the legendary British caricaturist and book illustrator George Cruikshank (1792-1878) , praised as the "modern Hogarth" during his life. His most famous work are the illustrations for Charles Dickens' books. This book is a complication of illustrations from eight different books by Henri Fielding, Tobias Smollett and others (see subtitle). Each illustration is accompanied by the corresponding chapter from the respective book. 170x115mm. VIII+82 pages & 41 b&w plates. Brown corrugated cloth Hardcover with gilt lettering on spine. Text block upper edge dyed gilt. Cover stained and lumpy/wrinkled. Cover corners bumped and peeling, edges slightly bumped. Spine edges peeling. Spine front hinges partly cracked. Small part of spine loose with small piece missing. Two strips of scotch tape on spine and cover. First page and plate coming loose from binding. Second plate detached from binding. Pages slightly yellowing. All plates clean. [SUMMARY]: Despite the aforementioned wear to cover and spine, this extremely rare book of brilliant works by the legendary illustrator and caricaturist is in very good condition for its age.

7412Date place and publisher not stated. London: R. Ackermann 1813. On a piece of good wove paper roughly 415 x 260 mm. Dimensions of engraving 180 x 220 mm. On aged paper and with the margins of the leaf trimmed. Laid down along the right hand margin runs a strip of blue paper 30 x 410 mm which it may be possible for a professional restorer to remove. This edges the border of the print which is clear and entire and overlaps a few letters of the text. Neatly coloured in sombre tones. Beneath the print is the title which ends 'at Leipsic and its environs.' and beneath the title is an eleven-line section of text headed 'THE TWO KINGS OF TERROR.' beginning 'THIS Subject representing the two Tyrants viz. the Tyrant BONAPARTE and the Tyrant DEATH sitting together on the Field of Battle'. Death is seated on a cannon with one foot on a pile of cannonballs and the other on a broken French eagle facing a dejected Bonaparte seated on a drum. In the background the massed ranks of the allies their four flags flying drive the retreating French from the field. The final four-line paragraph reads 'The above description of the subject appeared in the Sun of Saturday the 6th of November. These pointed comments arose from the picture being transparent and from a Circle indicative of the strength and brotherly union of the Allies which surmounted the same composed of gas of brilliant brightness.' "Landing at New Orleans in late December, 1827, she went almost immediately up the river to Memphis and thence to Louisville and Cincinnati, reaching the latter place about February 10, 1828. At Memphis she tarried a few days and went to visit Francis Wright's near-by Nashoba Community, which oppressed her with its unfinished buildings and primitive surroundings. After leaving Cincinnati, the scene of her most violent tirades against the United States, she passed the summer of 1830 in Maryland. Here she observed slavery, especially among the small landed proprietors, and found the slaves not badly treated, although she believed the essence of the system to be bad" - Clark 112. She also visited Pennsylvania, Baltimore, Washington, and New York. "A minor classic of looking down one's nose" - Streeter 845. Her book became an instant best seller. Her attacks on the Americans assured that the book would be an object of great controversy, and would sell on both sides of the Atlantic.
