Satirical commentary on the era of the Franco-Prussian War, with 33 characteristic Nast cartoon illustrations. It is an allegorical story of Europe and the major European powers represented as school boys: William [William I], the German boy with his sly friend Mark [Bismarck; Louis [Napoleon III], the French boy; and John [Bull or Russell], the English boy. Aleck was a monitor as was Joseph. Nicholas, a boy who had been in the school but who had made an unprovoked attack on a quiet but dirty boy (Constantine) subsequently left. This story is of how William tried to overrun much of Louis' garden claiming that it was in defense of his Fatherland while John stood by. Dame Europa punished them all. American laughed. W145 Stack

Sm. folio, First Edition, with full-age illustrations throughout, endpapers lightly browned; original pictorial boards, black cloth back, very neatly recased, covers mildly age-marked else an unusually well-preserved, bright, clean copy. The third of Bateman's cartoon collections, and the first to focus on a specific theme - one which Bateman waas to make his own. He had just changed houses in Clapham, seen then (as, perhaps now) as the very essence of his subject. 'It is fair and reasonable to call Clapham the capital of Suburbia' (TWH Crosland, 1905). Al piatto anteriore, ritratto di una dama elegantemente acconciata e vestita entro cornice, mentre, a quello posteriore, spicca la figura dell'anfibio da cui l'almanacco prende il nome. Frontespizio in rosso e in nero con figura di una rana che suona una chitarra; testo entro filetto tipografico. Numerosissime illustrazioni a carattere umoristico e caricaturale incise in litografia n.t. o a pag. intera; le pp. 59-66 presentano sia il testo che le illustrazioni impresse monocromamente in rosso. Minimi restauri al dorso, usuali bruniture e fioriture interne, ma bell'esemplare. Curiosissima strenna bolognese adunante scritti in prosa e in versi di vari autori, tutti anonimi o pseudonimi e a carattere eminentemente umoristico. Fra i contributi: Il romanzo d'uno spiantato; Il Prete Cuoco; La Deplomazia femminile illustrata da Serafino; Non più inganni ovvero l'arte di conoscere maschi e femmine dai tratti del volto (trattato di negromanzia estetica di Lavater e Gall attaccati assieme); Qua e là per Bologna; Elisir di lunga vita (lavoro di Dulcamara); Minestrone illustrato (grande rivista comica del penzolante anno 1880). Le litografie e il testo de La Deplomazia femminile (pp. 42-50) sono impresse in tinta sanguigna. Assai singolare il trattatello di fisiognomica sopra citato, che occupa le pp. 59-66, mentre "Qua e là per Bologna" ha frontespizio autonomo ed è detto scritto "dal Cronista della Rana".
