London: J Hayes for Edward Orme 1810 several plates watermarked 1825. With 26 hand-colored plates uncolored portrait of Tim Bobbin. Folio xxxiii plates; gilt titled leather-backed marbled boards edges lightly rubbed.

Collier was the Lancashire Hogarth and celebrated both for his illustrations and his writings. These illustrations evoke the saucy genre paintings of earlier Dutch artwork as well as Hogarth and closer contemporaries such as George Moutard Woodward. They are exceptional though in their economy of composition with little expended on extraneous background and details and in this they stand apart from Woodward Rowlandson and other contemporaries. Topics include love anger mercenary marriage unions the squandering of savings in the pursuit of a Pyrrhic court victory. Dentistry or the torture of tooth pulling is the subject of a number of the plates as is intemperate drinking. The characters depicted are rogues simpletons rakes picaresque types vulgarians the panoply of everyday English society brimming with life if not always virtue.
J Hayes for Edward Orme, hardcover

pp. 34, (2) [Advertisements]. Soiled. Thin 12 mo. Original full cloth binding; worn at head of spine. Early manuscript ownerships of C. G. Van Gelden, Clarks Ferry, PA. Satirical commentary on the era of the Franco-Prussian War, with 33 characteristic Nast cartoon illustrations. It is an allegorical story of Europe and the major European powers represented as school boys: William [William I], the German boy with his sly friend Mark [Bismarck; Louis [Napoleon III], the French boy; and John [Bull or Russell], the English boy. Aleck was a monitor as was Joseph. Nicholas, a boy who had been in the school but who had made an unprovoked attack on a quiet but dirty boy (Constantine) subsequently left. This story is of how William tried to overrun much of Louis' garden claiming that it was in defense of his Fatherland while John stood by. Dame Europa punished them all. American laughed. W145 Stack
