Of particular interest is the amount devoted to eastern religions including Hinduism Buddhism Bramo-Somaj Shintoism Confucianism Zoroastrianism as well as Islam. The editor has included papers on the role of Buddhism in Siam and Japan the development of Confucianism extracts from the Koran and more. Of particular interest are the papers presented by African-Americans on the “American Negroe’s†role in Christianity including addresses by Bishop Arnett of the African Methodist Ethiopian Church as well as Fannie Barrier Williams on the “Religious Duty to the Negro†and “The Catholic Church and the Negro Race†by J.R. Slattery of Baltimore. Fannie Williams was a vociferous proponent of education for African-American women writing that in terms “of employment colored women bear a distressing burden of mean and unreasonable discrimination . . . colored women can find no employment in this free America.†As African-Americans were almost entirely excluded from the 1893 Columbian Exposition these papers and addresses offer just a few of the efforts by the Black community to engage with attendees. First editions of these promotional items intended to boost ticket sales and regular attendance at the 1939 GGIE which encouraged subscribers to buy “Sponsor’s Season Passes†and “39er Scrip Books†the year before the Fair was held in order to gain a substantial discount. They were available for early buyers at $ 20.00 and $ 5.00 respectively for each package. Although not recognized by the Bureau of International Exhibitions the GGIE organizers were hoping for a banner tourist season in 1939 for San Francisco but the onset of World War II and excessive costs resulted in over $ 4 million in losses the first year even with a court-ordered bankruptcy stay allowing the Fair to run until Sept. 1940 and 17 million visitors it still finished in the red. First edition of this exceedingly scarce original brochure for Peace Projects Inc. led by Berkeley CA Mayor Frank S. Gaines 1890-1977 was as an active proponent for maintaining America’s isolation from World War II as well as supporter of conscientious objectors and heavily involved in trying to address the plight of Japanese-Americans illegally interned by the U.S. during the War. An unusually scarce original albumen stereoview photograph capturing the prize-winning stand of decorative art glass offered by the famed Victorian china and glass manufacturer’s W.P. & G. Phillips located on Oxford Street & New Bond Street. They catered to a well-to-do class of clients and their displays offered intricate and beautifully made designs. The Great London Exhibition of 1862 emulated the original 1851 Crystal Palace Great Exhibition featured over 28000 participating vendors and set on the present site of the Natural History Museum and Science Museum in London’s South Kensington. Woodward 1836-1894 first established himself as a photography dealer and decorative arts and glass dealer in Orange MA before locating his firm in Rochester in 1862 where continued operating under his own imprint before becoming director of the Union View Co. in 1882 producing landscapes and architectural views.
