First edition of this uncommon prospectus intended to attract visitors and exhibitors to the Jamestown Ter-Centennial Exposition intended to follow after the great successes of the 1893 Columbian Exposition 1901 Pan-American and the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. Unfortunately the organizers were less than competent and by opening day only one-third of the fair’s grounds and buildings were complete Norfolk VA had very limited accommodations and poor transportation connections and there was an emphasis on Naval & military achievements including a re-enactment of the Battle of Hampton Roads between the CSS Virginia and the USS Monitor. The Powhatan Tribe settlement was shoved off to the Midway where it was overshadowed by the 101 Ranch Wild West Show so it was much less visited by the 3 million tourists. However the African-American Exhibition proved quite popular and the Negro Development and Exposition Co. estimated they drew 3000-12000 spectators per day. Jamestown Exposition Co., paperback

This guide map illustrates the venue for the 10th Allied Kyōshinkai Exposition of Kansai Prefectures held in Nagoya from March to June 1907. The exposition highlighted agricultural and industrial products with a notable section dedicated to silk. Numerous stalls offered local goods from each participating prefecture which extended beyond the Kansai region. <br><br>The map marks key areas including agricultural industrial machinery and patent pavilions surrounded by local produce stalls. A special exhibition on the Port Arthur sea battle is positioned near movie and charity halls. Beer halls and food stalls are also indicated. This souvenir photo album features 25 original photographs documenting two couple’s 1905 visit to the Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition which marked the anniversary of the famed exploration across the North American continent after the Louisiana Purchase. The album opens with two photographs of the Forestry Building composed entirely of giant Douglas Fir logs; while the following photos capture the giant lagoon constructed from Guild’s Lake the Foreign Exhibits Building Agriculture and Horticulture Palace the U.S. Government Building at the end of the Bridge of Nations and Frederic Remington’s sculpture “Coming through the Rye†later renamed “Off the Trail†of four wild cowboys coming into town. Of special interest is one woman standing at the base of one of the several Native Alaskan totem poles on the shore of Guild’s Lake during the Exposition and later moved to Sitka National Historical Park in Sitka Alaska. Vernacular photo albums composed by amateur photographers during the run of the Exposition are quite uncommon and most fairgoers relied on Robert Reid Shogren and the Kiser Bros. for their souvenir images. n.p., hardcover

First edition of this uncommon folding souvenir postcard celebrating the Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition featuring and reproducing the famed Caughey birds-eye. The birds-eye depicts the Guild’s Lake area of the grounds up and operating now bounded by Reed to Thurston Streets and 31st to 24th Streets in NW Portland. Prof. Willson fl. 1904-1920 began as a dance instructor with the Academy of Dancing located in the Hirsch Building but within a few years of the Exposition set up his own dance studio and was noted instructor of Waltzes. This card advertises the fact that couples could dance for .50¢ while an “Extra Lady†for .25¢ and even better for men in the very hot and humid Portland Pavilion they could dance without their coats in Shirt Waists. Caughey 1851-1925 was an Ohio Civil War veteran an itinerant chalk plate artist and had just created the year before in Feb. 1904 a Birds-Eye view reproduced over two pages in the Lewis and Clark Journal with noted birds-eye artist and cartographer Fred Routledge 1871-1936. Caughey began producing birds eye views in and around Portsmouth NH in the 1880’s and eventually became a commercial artist and newspaper editor in Portland Oregon where he would often produce images for the Mutual Label & Lithographic Co. These stereoviews illustrate the Sunken Gardens the U.S. Government Building the Agricultural and Foreign Palaces interiors and the iconic Forestry Building. Benjamin Kilburn 1827-1909. and his brother Edward b. 1830 initially operated their business together until Edward retired in the 1870’s and by 1872 they had a large photographic stereoview card factory one block from the Littleton trains station. Young salesmen carried the stereoviews on the trains and by the early 20th-Century the company was the most extensive producer of stereoview photographs purchasing images from such photographers as William H. Rau the Kiser Bros. and others. Wasson fl. 1899-1939 originally founded the International Stereograph Co. in 1899 in Decator IL and produced a wide range of images often in the West maintaining studios in Idaho Arizona and Oregon as well.
