From the introduction: "The Church History Exhibition held at St. Albans was intended to illustrate the History of the Church of England before and since the Reformation from the earliest times to the present day. With this object in view the Committee set themselves to gather together a selection of manuscripts books charters plans proclamations Acts of Parliament portraits views church-furniture vestments ornaments and plate and the result of their labours was an exhibition of great interest and of much educational value. Among the earlier exhibits may be mentioned the plan of the 4th Century Church at Silchester Hants the 8th or 9th Century Book of the Gospels from Hereford the 10th Century MS. of Bede on the Apocalypse from Lambeth William the Conqueror's Charter to Ramsey Abbey 12th Century Paten and Episcopal Ornaments from Chichester the Bishop of Truro's Mass-book of the 12th and 15th Centuries partly of the York Use the great MS. Bible written and illustrated at Winchester in the 12th Century the Hereford Breviary of the I3th Century the Sarum Breviary of the 14th Century from Lambeth Mr. Huth's MS. Missal of the 14th or 15th Century portions of a 14th Century Cope from Steeple Aston some 15th Century Panels of Alabaster MSS. of a Portiforium an Antiphonar a Grail a Processional and a Book of Hours - all of the 15th Century and all according to the use of Sarum - a MS. York Missal an Obituary Roll of an Abbot in Norfolk about 1450 a Herse Cloth or Funeral Pall 15th Century a sumptuously bound and illuminated Indenture dated 1504 concerning the Obit. of King Henry VII. in the Lady Chapel at Westminster a Pyx Cloth from Suffolk and the Dunstable Herse cloth. The Collection of Church Plate which was one of the features of the Exhibition included some earlv examples of Chalices and Patens found in the graves of Bishops and Clergy in various parts of England. It is not possible to call particular attention to any of the very large number of printed books which were exhibited but the cases full of Service books Primers &c were deeply interesting and Lord Crawford's collection of Proclamations and a collection of all the most important Acts of Parliament bearing on the Reformation added much to the educational value of the Exhibition. The wonderful series of Prayer Books from Edward VI. to Edward VII. and the collection of various translations of the Bible into English are catalogued apart from other MSS. and printed books." The section on bibles items 563-597 on pages 146-158 is entirely devoted to pre-1700 Bibles including one later facsimile with notes providing brief descriptions and putting each Bible in context. Oblong 4to. 10.25 x 7 in. 24 pp unpaginated. on thick black paper stock 27 mounted silver gelatin photographs nearly all sized 3.25 x 5.5 in. annotated below or alongside in white ink manuscript. Contemporary self-printed black paper covers white lettering printed on front cover title in white ink manuscript punch-sewn at spine w/ red silk braid minor edgewear slight bumping to 1 corner minor over-exposure to some of the images still a VG exemplar. An original vernacular souvenir photo album created by an unknown amateur photographer documenting their tour of the famed 1904 St. Louis World Louisiana Exposition Worldâ€™s Fair using their own camera -- typically after paying an entrance fee as inaugurated at the 1893 Columbia Exposition over 10 years before. The album opens with views of the Palace of Liberal Arts Festival Hall and the fountains Terrace of the States Electricity Palace Education and more. Along with many of the general public fair-goers these photographs reflect a fascination with the ethnological â€œHuman Zooâ€ exhibits at the Exposition including the Igarrote-Filipino Village with one young child striding in the fore-ground the Philippine Restaurant and view of the Village with huts temple and walled city. Also featured are a few of the Japanese tea garden and pavilion and the Chinese temple exterior and interior. The photographer also captured the Life-Saverâ€™s Exhibit by the Lifesaving Service; the Jefferson City Guards marching in front of the Austria & Sweden Buildings as well as the entrance to â€œthe Pikeâ€ with visits to the Japanese Roof Garden Restaurant Beer Garden and German Coffee House. Exterior views the Midway the Ferris Wheel interiors of all the exhibits sporting events and more. The Louisiana Purchase Exposition spread over 1200 acres and incorporated education into all aspects of the exhibitors including blacksmiths at work Native Americans living in their villages transplanted Philippine Moro natives elephant trainers lion tamers and more. Visitors to The Pike -- the mile long midway -- could scale the Tyrolean Alps visit Blarney Castle a Parisian fashion show dive under the sea or ride a burro to Cliff Dwellings. The 1904 St. Louis Fair also featured the first Airship races contest which offered a prize if the competing airships could complete the course three times at a speed of 15 m.p.h. A photo of Hippolyte Francisâ€™s airship Ville de St. Mande depicts the airship in flight with a 100 foot long gasbag and 35 feet in diameter. Workmen had to dig a trench to get the ship out of the aerodrome and it later crashed into the concourse fence and did not fly again. N.D. Thompson Publishing Co., hardcover
