Three sized 6 x 3 in. mounted on 7 x 3.5 in. beige-coloured tan studio boards Kilburn w/ imprints below size of images & verso 2 only w/ ink MS annotations; two 6 x 3 in. silver gelatin mounted on gray studio boards printed imprint & caption scalloped upper fore-edges minor dustsoiling shelfwear still a VG group from the library of Prof. Marvin Nathan. Five original and scarce stereoview photographs of the Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition & Oriental Fair which marked the anniversary of the famed exploration over the Louisiana Purchase. These stereoviews illustrate the Sunken Gardens the U.S. Government Building the Agricultural and Foreign Palaces interiors and the iconic Forestry Building. Benjamin Kilburn 1827-1909. and his brother Edward b. 1830 initially operated their business together until Edward retired in the 1870’s and by 1872 they had a large photographic stereoview card factory one block from the Littleton trains station. Young salesmen carried the stereoviews on the trains and by the early 20th-Century the company was the most extensive producer of stereoview photographs purchasing images from such photographers as William H. Rau the Kiser Bros. and others. Wasson fl. 1899-1939 originally founded the International Stereograph Co. in 1899 in Decator IL and produced a wide range of images often in the West maintaining studios in Idaho Arizona and Oregon as well. One silver gelatin photograph sized 8 x 9.8 in. on thick photo paper stock and appears to be direct copyprint from glass plate negative 1 small tear lower right corner dustsoiling still VG sharp image. An original photograph of the famed Forestry Building which at one time was the largest log cabin in the World featuring one million board feet of old growth timber and renowned for the collonade of 52 uniform massive matching old growth trees with 6 foot trunks. Constructed by Simon Benson for the Exposition and largely an outlier from the Spanish Renaissance Revival architecture prevalent at the Fair the Forestry Building would survive the Exposition fall into disrepair and had been mostly restored in 1959 for the Oregon Sesquicentennial Celebration.
