Original publisher's gilt-decorated blue cloth lettered in gilt to spine and upper board. Lightly rubbed and marked with slight wear to extremities. Spotting and browning to endpapers otherwise internally clean and crisp. A fine 'presentation copy' of the detailed catalogue produced for the 1911 Scottish Exhibition of natural history art and industry held in Glasgow. The first trade edition was issued in two volumes shortly afterwards. The third of four international exhibitions held in Glasgow during the late Victorian period the fair which attracted over 9.3 million visitors featured numerous cultural and industrial artefacts but drew criticism for its inclusion of human exhibits including a 'village' of Highlanders and displays of people from Lapland and West Africa including several children. The fair's profits allowed for the creation of a Chair of Scottish History and Literature at the University of Glasgow first offered to Scottish historian Sir Robert Sangster Rait 1874-1936. .
