Embossed limp brown covers raised lettering w/ gilt highlights on front cover punch-sewn at gutter margin w/ blue silk ribbon yapp edges slight curving to cover very minor shelfwear still NF copy. First edition of these nicely executed photogravure images of the magnificent Columbian Exposition in 1893. The historic World’s Fair which ran almost six months with grounds and gardens laid out by Fredrick Olmsted covering 630 acres and a Midway skyline dominated by the 250-foot Ferris wheel designed by George Ferris. These photogravures depict the Machinery Hall Admin Building and Court of Honor the Lagoon The Art Palace Woman’s Building the Japanese Hooden Palace on Wooded Island The Krupp Gunworks building and even the Monastery of “La Rabida.†Adolph Wittemann and his brother Herman began working as printers in New York in 1867 and first started printing books and postcards under the Albertype name in 1887. Adolph acted not only as agent finding customers for their services but taking photographs across the country to be made into postcards. One albumen stereoview photograph sized 5.75 x 3.25 in. mounted on beige studio board sized 7 x 3.5 in. w/ photographer’s imprint and caption on the board VG exemplar from the library of Prof. Marvin Nathan. An unusually scarce original albumen stereoview photograph capturing the prize-winning stand of decorative art glass offered by the famed Victorian china and glass manufacturer’s W.P. & G. Phillips located on Oxford Street & New Bond Street. They catered to a well-to-do class of clients and their displays offered intricate and beautifully made designs. The Great London Exhibition of 1862 emulated the original 1851 Crystal Palace Great Exhibition featured over 28000 participating vendors and set on the present site of the Natural History Museum and Science Museum in London’s South Kensington. Woodward 1836-1894 first established himself as a photography dealer and decorative arts and glass dealer in Orange MA before locating his firm in Rochester in 1862 where continued operating under his own imprint before becoming director of the Union View Co. in 1882 producing landscapes and architectural views. An exceptional quartet of vernacular souvenir photographs capturing events & sights at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition. These open with an image of one of the most popular Pay Streak attractions the Indigenous People’s villages attractions featuring the Igorrotes from the northern Philippines. The Igorrote Village showed traditional dwellings daily activities such as dances meal preparation weaving and farming and followed the pattern of earlier appearances at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair and 1905 Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition. The Pay Streak included as well the Cairo & Oriental Village geisha girls in the Japan Village exhibit the Formosa Tea Parlor the Chinese Village as well as a roller-coaster like scenic railway the Temple of Palmistry the very popular Eskimo Village the Battle of Gettysburg Cyclorama and more. The balloon ascension photo captures the “Captive Balloon†which was tethered southeast of the main A-Y-P grounds from which photographer Vern Grinnold was able to capture his aerial photo of the grounds. The other two depict the Forestry Building which was one of the largest log houses ever built featuring a frontage of 320 feet and designed by Charles Saunders and George Lawton; along with the Administration Building. n.p., unknown
