1919006803Milano-Roma: Alfieri & Lacroix 1919. Limited First Edition. Portfolio. . Very Good. No. 186 of 250 limitation. Scarce -- only copy recorded on OCLC First Search at BNF! Elephantine folio 66 by 49 cm with pictorial element excluding margins of mounted sheet 43 by 28 cm. Title page preface table of contents followed by 20 plates depicting the Italian navy and sailors during the First World War. All leaves loose as issued. Nine of the plates depict the Italian navy in one way or another and 11 plates relate to the Serbian retreat during the war. Eight of the plates are portraits the remainder being action scenes. The artwork is broad stroked and has elements of Expressionism. Captured is both the heroism of the sailors and the grimness bleakness and suffering of war. The illustrations are two toned with the color varying but always solemn and dark in feel. Carpi 1886-1973 was a notable Italian artist who among other things helped design new stained glass windows for the Duomo in Milan. During the Second World War he was imprisoned by the Germans in a concentration camp an experience he recorded in sketches and writings -- thus in some sense a counterpart to this series of artwork covering the First World War.
