First edition of the third volume in the series. Copy #846 of two thousand numbered copies. In the creation of this lavish program for the 15 May Ball held at the Hotel Astor sponsors selected an artist or artists from the membership to create full- page original designs associated with their product or service. "Each page was designed by the artist directly on the litho plate thus making this a collection of original lithographs" - prefatory note. Byron Browne Adolf Dehn Sol Wilson and Ruth Reeves created the color works for the covers and Milton Avery T.L. Feinenger Antonio Frasconi Chaim Gross John Groth Jacob Lawrence Ben Shahn Raphael Soyer and Max Weber were among the contributors to the internal plates a few in colors but the majority monochrome. A few artists contributed more than once and while the majority are signed in the plate a few are not. Gorgeous Chinese lacquer boards used in the binding showing two stylized court scenes with a heavy use of gold and an unusual brick colored background. with floral borders dragons etc. N.d. circa 1860. Folio 39 by 28.5 cm. 43 engraved plates of famous women mostly from the Ancien Regime such as Madame du Barry Madame de Pampadour Marie Antoinette Adrienne Lecouvreur an actress and the basis for a Celia opera and the Duchesse de Berry but not only French ladies -- Anne Boleyn and the daughter of Rubens for example -- as well as mythogical goddesses and the like. Perhaps the most salient unifying element other than renown -- does that apply to fictional figures after all -- is that almost all of the ladies would also be considered beauties. Complete three year run of Biedermeier period beautiful plate or illustration-oriented German decorative arts publication. Styles promoted include neo-classical Greek and Gothic Revival -- in other words the full range of styles associated with the Biedermeier period. While this was a German publication and Biedermeier was most tightly associated with the German-speaking world the designs shown here are very much in keeping with the designs coming out of other parts of Europe and America. 4to. 28.5 by 19 cm. 108 plates most of which are color plates depicting ovens urns bowls other porcelain ware mantels friezes cornices other ornament and architectural features. Explanations of the plates are pasted onto the backs of some of the plates several plate explanations running on a single sheet which is cut smaller than the plates. Plates are numbered in three series essentially. The plates were issued four at a time. Original wrappers bound in. The publication is scarce with no institutional copies found outside of Europe and all but two of these in Germany. The magazine was published concurrently or slightly later in Weimar by a different publisher. Condition: foxing throughout sometimes heavier in darkness. Binding worn along edges and marbling surface sometimes rubbed. Spine calf darkened. Böhme. Plates printed by Halle & Walther, Weimar unknown
