Written by James Fairfax McLaughlin (1839-1903), this is a caustic poetic satire on the "Black Republican" Union Civil War General and notorious carpet-bagger - Ben Butler (who was widely reviled for years after the war by Southern whites, who gave him the nickname "Beast Butler". It is most famous for its biting etched illustrations by the powerful artist and Confederate sympathizer A. J. Volck. Adalbert John Volck (1828-1912) emigrated to America from Bavaria in 1849, and became a successful dentist in Baltimore. He is principally remembered for "Confederate War Etchings", a series of caricatures favorable to the Southern cause, issued in 1862 & 1863 under the pseudonym "V. Blada." VERY SCARCE. W20

1st edition thus [2nd edition, expanded from the first] Bound in 18th Century, full leather, retaining what appear to be the 17th Century spines. In custom clamshell box. 8vo, Volume 1:[4]+[19]+160 pages; Volume 2: pages 161-315 +12+[32] pages. Beautiful engraved Illustrations of coins and medals throughout, many foldout. In French. Title translates as Metalic History of the Republic of Holland. New Edition Augmented by 140 Medals. Graesse I, 433. Lipsius / LS 47. The Bourbon historian and scholar Pierre Bizot (1630-1696) was one of the first authors to take an interest in modern numismatics. The author also proposed to reconstruct the history of the Netherlands based on the production and description of the medals. Metal production in the Netherlands from 1566 to 1680 is described with a great luxury with both numismatic and historical information. The book of Bizot had been printed for the first time in Paris in 1687 in folio format. In this second edition in smaller format, the first two volumes reproduce the text of Bizot. However the editor there has inserted several additions and had many plates engraved again, that were engraved in reverse in the first edition issued a year earlier in 1687. Includes Remarques sur Ledition De Paris De la Republique de Hollande de Mr. Bizot at the end of the 2nd volume. A supplement was published over a decade later. Paper and internal binding excellent with only light toning, no tears, Very Good Condition. (AC-21-18)
