A tight clean copy in the original cloth binding; board corners lightly bumped and a few mild taps to board edges the endpapers illustrated after woodcuts by Howard Simon. Solidly Very Good lacking the scarce dustwrapper. <br /> <br /> A great association copy inscribed by Gold to one of the leading leftist intellectuals and authors of his time. Wood 1852-1944 was a self-styled anarchist aesthete and painter. As an attorney in the 1920s he defended a number of prominent figures on the left including the anarchist lecturer Emma Goldman and contributed prolifically to the radical periodicals of the period. With his second wife Sara Bard Field he was a long-time resident of Los Gatos California and was known for entertaining visitors at the estate "The Cats" mentioned in the present inscription. Interestingly Wood did not have a reputation for sympathy with doctrinaire Marxist thought; it seems unlikely that Gold would have written Wood such an effusive inscription even a few years later as during the Great Depression he would rise to become one of the leading apparatchiks in the CPUSA. 19470001605ASHLAND DAYTON ORRVILLE OHIO OH. Good. 1947. On offer is an original very intriguing 1947 manuscript diary and journal of a terrible post World War II child custody case and divorce. Unique for the times this was handwritten by an unidentified rural Ohioan who may have been either a Myers or Garver as he identifies 2 uncles. The author tells of his daily life which usually revolved around his large extended family the churches he attended and automobiles which he repaired and worked on all the time though he did do other work including farming. But right from the start the reader sees a pattern begin: the first entry is January 5th where he writes he has loaded up his car went to Ashland by 6:30 pm and then slept on his mother's davenport. He is also sick with a cold that never seems to end. Other entries mention more family travels large amounts of cash buying a car selling a house long and late hours weather reports and concerns and social observations. Yet all the while in the background are his health and the ups and downs of his divorce. He appears to be ill a lot perhaps the stress he sees the doctor many tests different shots and so on. In July he is in trouble with the law who seem only too glad to give him a hard time even though he has legal counsel. A part of the diary tells of his struggles with his own child custody case in which he is trying to get custody of his child. He notes trial dates of which he was never informed. The custody case and visitation get very dramatic as his ex-wife or girlfriend tries hiding the child from him in Alabama. He travels to Jacksonville to talk to the Mayor who took him to the High School where he had traced his daughter Sylvia. He also travels to Alabama and Florida searching for his high school age daughter Sylvia. Later he went to Birmingham to enlist the help of the Sherriff. This whole case would have been very unusual for the time. He does a super job recording each and every visitor companion and family member: Uncles Charles Myers Uncle Newton Garver Woodford Howard Leroy Reynolds Glen McFern Paul Sharpe heard Dr. Davis missionary 35 years in India at a lecture sleeps at the church one night Joe Bagelys Chippewa Lakes Park Lattasburg downtown Dayton Mansfield Perrysville Jeromeville plus dozens of places on his travels. A fund raising poster in aid of World War I war orphans and children's charities organised by the Ministering Children's League at the Cercle Sportif Shanghai or Saigon Saturday April 12th at 3pm. 1924 76 x 50.5cm. <br>The original art work is in pencil and ink on tracing paper with some art work pasted down. It is fascinating to see the work in progress compared with the finished poster which is printed in black - on fragile paper but in very good condition. Original works from East Asia at this time are extremely scarce because of their ephemeral nature. Even though we have extensively researched this poster published by the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong there remains the possibility that this event could have taken place either in Cercle Sportif in Saigon or in Shanghai. <br> <br>Cercle Sportif Français- Shanghai. 1926 Rue Cardinal Mercier French Concession. <br>Known universally as the "French Club" this building was the home of Shanghai's most popular social and sporting clubs. Unlike the stuffier Shanghai Club and the American Club this was the most cosmopolitan club in town even extending its membership to women quelle horreur!; although to balance this madness female membership was limited to 40. The club featured a roof-top terrace for summer dances restaurants a ballroom restaurants bars billiards room and games room. For the more active there was a huge swimming pool and twenty tennis courts. <br>The clubhouse was designed by Shanghai's leading French architects Alexandre Leonard and Paul Veysseyre of Leonard Veysseyre et Kruze in the French Renaissance style. <br> <br>Cercle Sportif Saigon: The rebuilt Cercle Sportif Saïgonnais at 55 rue Chasseloup-Laubat was inaugurated on 5 December 1925 at “a brilliant reception attended by the Governor of Cochinchina and key notables of the colony.” <br> <br>According to a press release issued on 31 January 1926 by the Agence économique de l’Indochine the Cercle’s upgraded facilities included “10 tennis courts a football field with spectator stands which may rarely be found in France and comfortable buildings with rooms for fencing billiards games and reading a dance hall and vast changing rooms.” It concluded: “Saigon now has a club worthy of the colony which can easily be compared with those in Shanghai Hong Kong or Singapore.” <br> <br>The Ministering Children's League was founded by the Countess of Meath in her London house 83 Lancaster Gate February 10 1885. It owed its inception to the deep impression made upon Lady Meath about a child by M. L. Charles-worth's delightful story "Ministering Children." The idea of the book haunted her and she determined to form a society under that name. <br> <br>A small children's league thus started in a London parish would spread until it encircled the globe. It travelled quickly through the parishes of England was welcomed in Scotland and Ireland and crossed the Atlantic and rooted itself in the United States and in Canada. It had flourishing branches in Australia South Africa New Zealand and Tasmania and has penetrated to India China and Japan. A little shaken but overall a very good copy of a rare book and extremely hard to find in the jacket no copies appearing in the auction records. Jews without Money is a semi-autobiographical work sometimes referred to as the first important Lower East Side novel and the progenitor of "an entire cycle of novels about a racialized US working class". The publisher's blurb describes it brilliantly thus: "With untrimmed speech the author's tailors gangsters and prostitutes reflect the despairing effort of the Jewish spirit to survive the degradation of American slumdom: a tragic yet humorous story of Ancient Israel struggling in the Underworld of the most modern City". The group originally as eight members consisted of Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin founders of the Youth International Party YIPPIES Tom Hayden a co-founder in Students for a Democratic Society Black Panther Chairman Bobby Seale whose case would be declared a mistrial during the trial leading to his exclusion from the Chicago 7 David Dellinger and Rennie Davis members of the National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam MOBE and John Froines and Lee Weiner. The address 28 E. Jackson was a building where Rennie Davis rented a space so it is possible that the MOBE printed this though we cannot confirm. unknown

A member of the Republican Party Bush also served as the 43rd vice president from 1981 to 1989 in the U.S. House of Representatives as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and as Director of Central Intelligence. Bush served in the navy during World War II. After the war he graduated from Yale and moved to Texas where he built a successful oil company. He won election to the 7th congressional district in 1966. President Nixon appointed Bush Ambassador to the United Nations in 1971 and as chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1973. In 1974 President Gerald Ford appointed him as the Chief of the Liaison Office to the People's Republic of China and in 1976 Bush became the Director of Central Intelligence. Bush was elected vice president in 1980 and 1984 as Reagan's running mate. In the 1988 presidential election Bush defeated Democrat Michael Dukakis becoming the first incumbent vice president to be elected president since Martin Van Buren in 1836. Bush navigated the final years of the Cold War and played a key role in the reunification of Germany. After serving in the House of Representatives and two failed attempts at the U.S. Senate he served as U.S. representative to the United Nations chairman of the Republican National Committee steering the party through the Watergate scandal envoy to China in the last years of Chairman Mao and head of the CIA. Victor "Vic" Gold September 25 1928 - June 5 2017 was an American journalist author and Republican political consultant. Gold began his career as a lawyer and advisor to the Democratic Party in Alabama before switching to the Republican Party. He worked as deputy press secretary for Senator Barry Goldwater during the 1964 presidential election and press secretary for Vice President Spiro T. Agnew from 1970 to 1973. Gold left politics for a time to work as a writer and political commentator returning in 1979 as a speechwriter to the presidential campaign of George H. W. Bush and was an advisor to Bush's 1988 and 1992 campaigns. He was the author of several published works of non-fiction. He co-wrote George H. W. 19290001973CHICAGO ILLINOIS IL. Good. 1929. On offer is a fascinating original manuscript Depression Era 5 year diary handwritten by a girl named June b. November 6 1909 whose surname is likely either Hluegner or Kandles as she has mention two Grandmothers with those names. June is a sad girl lonely for friendship even while a member of a sorority and it seems her happiness depends on her self image and body weight: 'Went to sorority. They all talk about their fellows. Oh lord! A perfect body!' Her sadness is also reflected in her nostalgia for a few moments of happiness in her past: 'in 1927 two years before this time I was seeing David Filerman. Wonder what he's doing now.' Home life is difficult too: 'Chas and Yi came over after Church. Dad certainly is unscientific. He's right. The world's crazy. Such a tirade of abuse I never heard. Too glad to go to Helen's.' She has one older sister Ruth who is 25 in 1929 and doesn't get along with her. Ruth seems to get all the guys eventually to get married in 1933. June is interested in gardening studies botany and music. Her basic premise is to find love marriage and to lose weight. In these 5 years she achieves nothing in that regard although she learns to drive a car on July 5 1929. June wonders Feb. 20 1930 "why I shouldn't act like other girls Why keep myself clean No fun like others." June is in turmoil about being able to go to college primarily The Principia A School and College for Christian Scientists to which she was accepted July 8 1929 but her attendance seems delayed due to financial difficulties. She does begin to attend in 1932 and also joins the school Glee Club. Besides attending school June works in an office. June does not have an aptitude for studies i.e. October 20 1931 E-French D-European History C-Geology and English and B-Botany. Every so often June laments the fact that she has no boyfriend no money nothing! She does not get along with her father but loves him dearly. Sometimes there's a reprieve and they have a lovely time together. June loves her mother though her mother has expectations of June i.e. her mother would have a fit if she learned she gained 10 lbs. She hates Chicago and often mentions taking grandparents and going shopping in Chicago. She might be living on the outskirts because one entry observes July 20 1931 that the grain is all cut and stacked. This Depression era diary notes on May 11 1930 "most of the furniture gone from the house couldn't give mother anything for Mother's Day". On March 9 1931 "not much food in the house but will manage - so hungry and cold". Then later that year March 26 the family receives a check for $8870.44 and they in turn are very happy. Some miscellaneous observations include: March 4 1933 President Roosevelt elected and March 8 1933 "House meeting on Death" and May 30 1933 "went to Art Institute and saw period rooms and painting exhibit" and June 22 1933 "Went to World's Fair - Marvellous". The approximately 395 page book is well filled and for researchers and historians of Chicago area Depression Era or women's studies will be hard pressed to find a more interesting peek into the world of this young woman. THE EXTRAORDINARILY RARE FIRST PUBLICATION of a grand total of two OF THE SOCIETE DE BIBLIOPHILES "LES PLAQUETTES" AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF FRENCH PRE-WAR FINE AVANT-GARDE TYPOGRAPHIC PRINTING. 2 blank leaves; 27 pp. This bibliophile society was conceived by Gaston-Louis Vuitton in 1929 and by 1932 it had 57 members but hadn't yet published anything. In that year it lost all of its funds when its bank went belly up. The Society got rolling again in 1938 and finally printed this gorgeous book in 1939. The text of course is about booklets and their history in France and in the world. Shortly after this book was printed World War II and the German Occupation put a final end to this Bibliophile Society: its only other publication was an equally rare edition of St Francis' "Cantique du soleil" printed in 1943. Fleuret died in 1945. Notable avant-garde typographical design on cover. Edition limited to 111 numbered copies but much rarer as few if any copies were ever actually distributed to the members of the Société beautifully printed with huge margins on fine Montval laid paper. Folio. Publisher's wraps. UNCUT AND UNOPENED FINE AND BRIGHT LIKE NEW WITH NO DEFECTS. Original paper knife laid in. An incredible survival even more so in such pristine condition. The book is reminiscent of Ambrose Bierce's Devil's Dictionary. For example an early entry is for "寫眞çµå©š" shashin kekkon or Picture Marriage: "The Japanese who have always imitated foreign countries in every aspect of their lives are now the only ones in the world with this unique and original invention."<br /> <br /> Picture Marriage is just one example of Yamazaki's commentary on the anti-Japanese climate in the United States at the time. Text printed in Catalan Llull is known for being among the first authors to use his vernacular language Catalan to communicate his ideas. Folio . 175 1 pp. with 11 full page hand-colored etchings drawn engraved and colored by the artist and ten large chapter headings all signed in pencil by the artist. Loose as issued in vellum-backed chemise with gilt spine lettering. Housed in a custom acrylic slipcase. A wonderful copy.This is a Catalan translation of Llull's 1305 although first published in 1512 work entitled Liber de Ascensu et Descensu Intellectus The Book of the Ascent and Descent of the Intellect. Ramon Llull is often thought of as an alchemist of the first order but strictly speaking he was a philosopher/theologian. His magnum opus Ars Magna displays his chief theme; the understanding of eternal truths by way of the intellect. While not himself an alchemist the seekers of the philosopher's stone were very influenced by Llull's ideas. In this book Llull describes the movement of the intellect through the many levels of understanding which some Renaissance alchemists such as Heinrich Khunrath interpreted as analogous to the transmutation process in alchemy. This striking volume was issued in an edition of 165 copies. This copy is one of XVI #VII copies containing an original drawing of one of the plates or of 2 of the vignettes a complete set of the proofs a series of sanguine proofs of the plates and the vignettes and the final proof of all the plates. It is the most desired format. Ramon de Capmany y de Montaner 1899 - 1992 was a Catalan painter engraver and bibliophile. He trained as a painter at the Escuela de la Lonja where he studied under the supervision of Francesc Labarta. He was one of the members of the the Evolutionists and one of the regulars of the Sala Pares. The Evolutionists were an artistic group from Barcelona in the aesthetic sphere of Noucentisme and who rejected programmatic orthodoxy and influenced by Cezanne and the Fauvists developed a personal work constructed and of austere colors. Mainly a landscape painter he mostly painted the surroundings of the Montseny Massif and the old part of the city of Barcelonain a naturalistic style. He also illustrated bibliophile editions such as this one. He held the position of curator in the board of the Ateneo Barcelones during the presidency of Pedro Gual Villalbi between 1952 and 1962. Some of his works can be found in the National Art Museum of Catalonia.One of the proofs of the work apart from the one designated to be signed by the artist is dedicated by Capmany to a Mr. Riera with the following words: ‘Prueba dedicada al Sr. Riera por el artista. Ramon Campmany.’ An original steel etched plate one used in the making of this volume comes with the work. It’s an additional object and no other copies have such a plate. With 43 silver gelatin photographs mounted w/ black corners sized from 2.75 x 3.75 in. up to 3.5 x 6 in. some date stamped on versos several w/ pencil annotations in cursive manuscript minor chipping to couple corners edgewear. Contemporary flexible ribbed black cloth post-binder nickel plated screwposts at gutter margins minor edgewear VG. This series of photographs captures the historic gold mining by the last gold dredge to operate on Foots Creek in Southern Oregon on the property of Edward Dole. Several dredges and placer mining operations mined Foots Creek from the 19th well into the 20th Century with one dredge owned by the Rogue River Gold Mining Co. known as the Ferry Dredge dredged both forks of Foots Creek until 1935 when it was moved to Graves Creek. Under the direction of “Wicks the Boss†this dredge was brought in unassembled by railroad in 1939 and “this was his 35th dredge.†The photos show the steel hull mass boom erecting the steel framework framing the steel gantries for the dredge installing the winches as well as the massive 67 bucket line ladder built by New York Engineering Co. Yonkers NY. The newly constructed dredge shown here proceeded to work it’s way up the creek digging 20 feet below the water line and moved 4000 yards daily through the screening and wash plant with conveyor belts stacking the tailings behind. In March 1941 just months before the attack on Pearl Harbor the dredge was dismantled and moved to another location by the Murray Dredging co. although mounds and walls of rock paralleling the creek still offer visible signs of its operation. One double atlas folio colour lithograph map sized 28 x 40.5 professionally mounted on archival linen sized 32 x 45 in. w/ scale of 1:24000 minor edgewear slight age toning at fore-edges and lower corner still a VG bright copy. First edition of this very uncommon Progressive Era map of Portland Oregon in the years between the Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition and World War I. The map depicts public lands including township range and section grids along with neighborhood and addition place names steam & electric interurban railroads and electric streetcar lines along with parks city limits and radial distances from point in downtown Portland included. Place names included Zion Town the old steel bridge built in 1888 followed by a new Steel bridge which opened later in 1912 the Plank/Old Canyon Road Laurelhurst and others. Of particular interest beyond most maps of Portland during the era this map delineates a significant portion of Vancouver Washington prior to the construction of the Interstate Bridge across Hayden Island as well as inroads into portions of Northwest Portland and Washington County in the Southwest. Fritsche 1877-1928 was an intrepid German-American photo-lithographer architect printer and later photographer who first arrived in New York before coming West to the Pacific Northwest in 1907 where he set up an architecture and engraving firm with his brother Rudolph Fritsche. Wenzel is perhaps best remembered as architect of the historic Henry C. & Wilhemina Bruening House Craftsman bungalow located at 5919 North Williams in Portland’s Humboldt neighborhood erected in 1910. De Bru 1900-1990 was a child prodigy taken to Cuba where he trained as a classical violinist played with the Orchestra of the Teatro Nacional in Havana and after New York was hired as musician and caricaturist in Hollywood at the Bowl. He also put together a tango band in 1927 which performed at the Cocoanut Grove at the Ambassador and later took up a long term residency at the Waldorf Astoria in New York for 15 years and one of the noted performers was Desi Arnaz. His famed caricature “Curtain of Stars†measuring 40 x 60 feet hunt at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.
