New New English Original cloth bdg. Dust wrapper. Folio. (37 x 28 cm). Edition in English. 360 p., color ills. Ipek: Imperial Ottoman silks and velvets. With contribution by Serife Atlihan, Beata Biedronska-Slotowa, Harald Bohmer, Inna Vishnevskaia. Compiled and edited by Julien Raby and Alison Effeny. "This book is the result of an international research project under-taken over a number of years. It is the first major study of Ottoman textiles to attempt a classification of the key technical and decorative categories, and is also the first to offer a catalogue of dateable textiles. The authors not only draw on the famous collections of the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul and other major museums around the world, but have rediscovered many lesser-known fabrics in ecclesiastical treasuries in Russia and Central Europe. New research in the Ottoman archives has shed documentary lihgt on the legislation of silk production, and on the competing industries of Bursa and Istanbul. Examples of the three weaves favoured by the Ottomans, seraser (cloth of gold and the silver), kadife (velvet) and kemha (a type of brocaded fabric) are illustrated in full-page colour illustrations, and black-and-white figures of many of the key design groups demonstrate the creativity of Ottoman weavers.". Status symbols, diplomatic gifts, artistic mediums, and economic treasures--figured silk fabrics were among the most powerful and most characteristic artistic products of the Ottoman Empire. Wars were fought for control of silk revenues, and governments devoted major bureaucratic efforts toward the organization, regulation, and taxation of silk production. Ipek: The Crescent & the Rose is the most comprehensive and magnificently illustrated overview of Ottoman silk textiles of the 16th and 17th centuries. Its lavish, full-bleed, six-color reproductions of fabrics from the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, and...

Frey 1893-1972 began as an occupational therapist in woodworking at the U.S. Army’s Walter Reed Hospital and began learning and teaching handweaving as well as training her students to construct weaving looms. After moving to New York she worked in the textile industry and later opened her own design studio taught weaving and by 1940 was one of the co-founders of the New York Guild of Handweavers whose first year’s weaving programs focused on studying Native American Weaving of the Cherokee Tribe. Posselt 1858-1921 emigrated from Austria after managing his father’s textile mills and was a designer in mills all over New England and Pennsylvania. He became the first director in 1884 of the first successful textile school in the U.S. and later became editor of the Textile Record of North America the foremost journal on textile design and manufacturing at the end of the 19th-Century. Although his many works on textile machinery and manufacturing are now primarily of historical interest this well-illustrated work on weaving and loom design is still relevant and considered some of the most important books on textile design ever published.
