[8], 9-222 pages. Occasional black and white illustrations. Undated but appears to be circa 1937. A collection of approximately 180 Canadian mining verses compiled, in part, because "a good deal of verse associated with the industry's remoter past was in danger of becoming permanently lost." - Foreword. Includes works by Robert Service, J.C. Murray, Alpine MacGregor, and many others, brief biographies for fourteen of whom are included at back. Somewhat above-average wear to publisher's illustrated brown buckram-covered boards. Front hinge starting. Narrow opening in binding at title page. Prior owner's details atop front free endpaper. No dust jacket, presumably as issued. A worthy vintage copy of this nostalgic Mother Lode of Canadian verse. Book
xi, 394 pages. Bibliography. Black and white photographic plates. "Joe Boyle led many lives - sailor, sports promoter, entrepreneur, diplomat, soldier, spy - each life a testament to a romantic nature, a love of action, a blunt, single-minded devotion to doing what seemeed right and what needed to be done. Decorated by four European countries for outstanding services in war, he long remained unsung and all but forgotten in his own land. Now, using new material from the Boyle family archives never before published, this book recreates in colourful detail the exciting life of one of the last international heroes." - dust jacket. Book

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. Under Gladstone Burt served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade 1892-1895. From the papers of Arthur George Liddon Rogers 1864-1944 son of the editor of the economist Thorold Rogers and written while Rogers was Secretary of the Liberal Publication Department a sort of public relations department a position to which he was appointed in November 1891. With regard to an LPD publication he regrets that he ‘cannot do the leaflet’. Not only does he have ‘more work on hand than I can get through my having a member of the Royal Commission inquiring into the subject hampers me’. He does not think he could ‘with propriety write publicly on the subject at a time when I am engaged with others in preparing the Report’. TWO 2 February 1893: 4pp 12mo. A ‘rush of correspondence’ has left him without a ‘spare minute’. He is enclosing a letter from one of his constituents ‘in the hope that you may be able to forward him some leaflets bearing upon the points he mentions’. Burt’s own paper ‘on the Mines Reg Act that I wrote for you might be useful and I have no doubt you have something on Free Education and the other questions referred to’. He asks if there is ‘a cheap edition of Mr John Nohle’s book’. He ends with reference to the return of a book and the settling of an account. THREE 11 February 1893. 2pp 12mo. In thanking him for his ‘kind letter & for yr prompt attention to my request’ he is returning a cheque. FOUR 11 October 1893. 4pp 12mo. In a secretarial hand with Burt’s autograph signature. He is ‘away from the Board of Trade until Parliament re-assembles’ and is consequently ‘not in a position myself to verify all the facts contained in the enclosed pamphlet’. He believes ‘the facts given are strictly accurate except under the heading Seaman’s Wages’. As ‘chairman of the departmental Comttee that enquired into the subject’ he makes suggestions towards the way ‘the beginning of that paragraph should I think be somewhat modified’. He knows ‘that steps are now being taken to extend the system to foreign posts. If the leaflet is not issued before I return to the B of T I will make further enquiry should you so desire with a view to ensure absolute correctness.’ 2 June 1892; and 2 and 11 February, and 11 October, 1893. 19163385Cripple Creek and Denver Co 1916. Very good. Eight partially-printed forms completed in manuscript. Minor wear and soiling. A collection of seven applications for membership in the Miners' Protective Association and one application for the Western Federation of Miners all filled out by prospective members in the early 20th century. The applicants range in age from 23 to 59 and were born in a wide variety of locations including several midwestern states Canada and England. They report varying levels of mining experience from four to forty years with one applicant reporting no experience having worked previously as a rancher. None of the men were members of any other labor organization at the time of their applications. Interestingly the Miners' Protective Association and the Western Federation of Miners worked at cross purposes from each other. The former was a cooperative association formed by mining companies in order to discourage the unionizing of workers; the Western Federation of Miners was a notable labor union that had previously participated in widely-reported and violent strikes in Cripple Creek in 1894 and 1903.

The forms themselves echo the competing motivations of the two groups. The application for the MPA asks applicants if they are or ever have been members of the Western Federation of Miners or any other labor organization. The Western Federation of Miners' application asks applicants if they have ever taken the place of strikers been a scab or assisted law enforcement or the Pinkerton Agency with opposing organized labor. An additional point of interest on the Western Federation of Miners application is the implication that the applicant is African American. The applicant William Judson reports his complexion as "Dark." People of color working as miners was rare in the west though certainly not unheard of. unknown

"Founded in Baltimore in 1852 to operate a cargo and passenger steamship line between Baltimore and Boston Mass. The service initially operated with two wooden hulled side wheelers but in 1859 built two iron hulled steamers to augment services and extended services to call at Providence Rhode Island. Services were disrupted by the American Civil War but resumed in 1864. After a period of decline after the war the company slowly recovered and by 1869 were able to order a new ship. Further ships were built in the 1870s and in 1876 the Baltimore & Savannah SS Co. was purchased which allowed the company to enter the cotton trade between Savannah Charleston and New York. The company expanded in the 1880s and added several new ports of call including Newport News and Norfolk to their routes. In 1900 a Philadelphia - Savannah service was started and in 1907 the Winsor Line of Philadelphia was purchased with their fleet of seven steamers. A new route between Baltimore and Jacksonville commenced in 1909 and in 1920 a service was initiated to Havana Cuba but this was discontinued after about a year. A service to Nassau Bahamas started in 1939 but on the entry of the United Stated into World War II in 1941 most of the company's ships were requisitioned for war duty. Limited services continued but after the war it was not considered financially viable to re-purchase ships which had been sold to the Government or to build new ships and in 1948 it was decided to cease trading. The company was officially liquidated in 1952." Pamphlet includes overview of the company; information about places along the route to include Chesapeake Bay Old Point Comfort Fort Monroe Hampton Hampton Roads and Norfolk; general information about the ships and officers; information about what one can expect while sailing; information on various rooms aboard the ship to include the Social Hall the Saloon the Companionway and Staterooms and the Culinary Department. "In the history of Mexican mining there are two key moments related to the participation of non-national companies specifically of British and American origin and for which Pachuca was a focus of great interest . The British companies stood out in the first decades 1860-1870 while the American companies at the end of the 19th century" See Ubilla Montiel: Inmigrantes españoles en Pachuca. 1866-1911: redes de parentesco matrimonio y ocupación 2013 pp. 35-6.
