1683001262Paris: A. Soubron 1683. Full Calf. Very Good. 14 412 pp. 100 emblem plates all full page. 12mo. 6 by 4 inches. Decorative devices head and foot pieces throughout in the form of bouquets friezes vases baskets as well as decorated letter at the beginning of each section 100 in all. Plates are wonderful baroque woodcuts each illustrating a moral. This would appear to be a second or third edition the first being in 1646. Brunet II 1658 who describes the work as "now a bit rare" mentions a 1684 edition without citing this earlier one and clearly meaning a different edition. Graesse III 114 mentions a 1681 edition without detail and thus this might essentially be. Tight. With some light scattered soilage but overall impression is clean other than on some of the plates a prior owner wrote Latin translations of the maxims beneath the printed captions -- never affecting the pictorial image. Also old handwritten cursive notes on title and blank verso. Attractively rebound in full modern calf with green and red spine labels. A. Soubron unknown

Buen ejemplar. Signed and titled in the plate. 8 7/16 x 6 inchesPlate plus margins. In excellent condition.Of 180 etchings catalogued by Zigrosser 103 were done by Marin in Europe between 1905 and 1910. Of these many were not editioned or exist only as trial proofs. Of the ones which were editioned the editions are often very small in many cases under 10 but some were done in editions of 25 to 50 one the Meaux Cathedral was printed by the Gazette de Beaux Arts in a large edition probably about 500. All of the European prints are fairly traditional in treating the subjects realistically but Marin's turn to Modernism is evident in Zigrosser 104 an etching of the Brooklyn Bridge the first print he did after returning to America in 1911. unknown

17251802070043Paris: Guillaume DeLisle Quai de l'Horloge 1725. First Edition. Map. Very Good. Original hand colored map. Crease at center fold of map. 62 x 47.5 cm. Scale: 1300000. Engraved by Marin.
"The second largest Caribbean island known to the Spanish as Hispaniola or Espanola and to the French as Saint Domingue was first explored by Christopher Columbus in 1492 and became the center of Spanish rule in the 16th century. While the Spanish settlements were concentrated on the eastern two thirds of the island buccaneers occupied the western third during the 17th century. Consequently in 1697 Spain ceded the western third to France. Although the French name is applied to the entire island on this 1725 map by the noted French geographer Guillaume Delisle the Spanish presence on the eastern part of the island is acknowledged with the designation "Quartiers des Espagnols" while the French area is labeled "Quartiers du Nord " and "Quartiers du Sud." Delisle's rendition of the island is based on a 1722 map prepared by the French engineer Amedee Frezier."
"DeLisle is important as the first "scientific" cartographer who incorporated the most current information on exploration and topography into his maps. . Lloyd Brown states that DeLisle "undertook a complete reform of a system of geography that had been in force since the second century and by the time he was twenty five he had very nearly accomplished his purpose." - David Rumsey Historical Map Collection.
Refs: Tooley Mapping of America 59. First edition of this exceedingly scarce catalogue describing and illustrating the Agena stage rockets and the Agena Target Vehicle also known as the Gemini-Agena Target Vehicle GATV which was an uncrewed spacecraft used by NASA during the Gemini program to develop and practice orbital space rendezvous and docking procedures in preparation for the Apollo program. The ATV consisting of an upper rocket stage from Lockheed was launched from Thor and Atlas booster rocket platforms but suffered from continued docking adapter failures after being developed by McDonnell Aircraft Co. The Gemini program capsules were built by McDonnell Aircraft and were the first astronaut-manned spacecraft to include an onboard computer for mission maneuvers very similar to the later Saturn Launch Vehicle digital computer and actually had a fair amount of control largely due to the prodding of Astronaut Gus Grissom. The original NASA photos here depict the Gemini Agena on pad 14 at Cape Canaveral Astronaut White taking his spacewalk during Gemini IV and other GATV assembly procedures. Of particular interest is a test fitting of the Gemini VI capsule with the GATV at the assembly site before they were each mounted on their respective launch vehicles. Printed photos and mimeographed biographies for Astronauts Grissom Walter Schirra Jr. John Young and Thomas Stafford are included.
