Norman "Sailor Jerry" Collins 1911–1973 was a seminal figure in the history of American tattooing renowned for elevating the craft through technical innovation bold stylistic synthesis and an uncompromising artistic ethos. Operating primarily out of Honolulu Hawaii Collins fused traditional American tattoo motifs—such as eagles ships and pin-up girls—with Asian influences particularly Japanese design principles creating a distinctive and enduring visual language. His contributions to the medium include the development of safer pigments custom needle configurations and a commitment to hygiene standards that helped professionalize tattooing in the mid-20th century. Book is in excellent condition: oversize book (13 1/2" H x 10 1/2" W) in heavy weave light green cloth with large gilt print at cover and spine; quite handsome. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Dust jacket shows light shelf wear, edge wear, one 2" closed tear on back. Wrapped in protective cover. Very large full page and a few two page prints throughout, landsacapes, portraits, a few city scenes, a few of the photographer at work. About 90 prints in all. Bio of Ansel Adams, for the time between 1902-1938. including correspondence between Adams and some of the notable names of photography; with contributions from Alfred Stieglitz, Edward weston, John Marin, Albert Bender, Cedric Wright, Charles Hitchcock Adams, Georgia O'Keeffe, Francis Farquhar, Frances Kehrlein, Dorothea Lange, et al. Contents include Golden Gate, Sierra Nevada, Sangre de Criston Making a photograph, etc. Publisher's page shows no additional printings.

Archive includes one deck of playing cards titled Operation Deep Freeze Task Force 43 two metal ashtrays one 4 1/2" dia. and the other 7 1/4" dia. both engraved "U.S. Naval Antarctic Support Activities; and an American United Life Annual Report three ring binder containing 24 pp. with 85 black and white photographs three- 8" x 10"; two - 5" x 7" and 80 4 7/8" x 3 1/2" and 6 blank pages. One 8 x 10 photograph features a Lockheed C-121J Willie Victor BuNo 131624 Phoenix 6 aircraft which was retired following "Deep Freeze '71" in March 1971 and which was not listed on the active duty resume for Deep Freeze operations in its early stages in the late 1950s.So likely the photographs were taken on the 1970-71 expeditions. Subjects of the photographs include equipment and aircraft personnel landscapes both on the ground and aerial and a great 8 x 10 of a husky sled dog. A unique slice of Antarctic exploration history.
