Large folding map 170 x 200 cm. old mended worming rebackedpastel colors Japanese reprint of a map printed in Henan in 1679 folds down to be 21.5 x 25.5 cm. woodblock printed hand color. V E R Y R A R E ! . . AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE WALL-SIZE MAP OF CHINA . . EXECTED BY A SHAOLIN ZEN MASTER The Shaolin Xi Monastery/Temple is a Chán Zen Buddhist temple at Song Shan near Zheng Zhou City Henan Province in Dengfeng China. It was led by Venerable abbot Shi Yongxìn. founded in the 5th century the monastery has been famous for centuries its association with Chinese martial arts and particularly with Shaolin Kung Fu. It is also a Mahayana Buddhist monastery perhaps best known to the Western world. . The Shaolin Monastery and its famed Pagoda Forest were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010 as part of the Historic Monuments of Dengfeng. Extracted from Wikipedia. . A RARE EDITION: Reprinted and published in Japan by Katsuragawa Hosan in 1750 reproduced from the Chinese original of Kangxi 27 1679. The original Chinese edition has been exceptionally obscure and impossible to come by for over the last two-hundred years and is believed now to be lost to posterity. . PRINTING TECHNIQUE AND THE PAPER: The work is woodblock printed by hand on hand-made Washi paper then hand-colored in delicate pastels. . CHINESE VIEW OF ANCIENT CHINA: This grand scale work covers a very large space and is quite handsome suitable for framing and display. The map shows a full view of all of China from the Great Wall in the North Shanghai the East coast down to the oceans in the South and Hainan Island and the coasts along he Eastern shores. This is a spectacular work showing each province in pastel colors with outlines large numbers of place names rivers & the major waterways mountains named and located. By and large inspired to show all of the known lands considered a part of China delineating the country and its exterior boundaries. . Japan and other islands are not shown but boxes with notes in Chinese as to their existence and location are well documented. The lower portion has text discussing the population of the various provinces and other notes. Areas beyond the traditional lines of China i.e.: North of the Great Wall and to . RARITY OF THE MAP AND ITS MAKERS: This grand-scale and truly spectacular work is virtually never found on the market. The Shaolin Monastery monks were the original founders of the celebrated and now famous Kung-fu martial art school located in Henan province. The priests were legendary and the most feared for their martial art prowess. They were also covert with their powerful political force in China. . SHAOLIN SI TEMPLE/MONASTERY LEGENDARY CUSTOMS: Priests who passed the highest level of Kung-fu martial art were invited to participate in a recognition ceremony. They were allowed to self-brand themselves by picking up a red-hot iron brazier that had long temple dragon decorations on the sides. The branding was accomplished by clamping the brazier between their forearms until the dragon image was branded on them. These brazier dragons are identical to the long dragon found at the top of this historic map. Another ancient practices used was the Jieba. It is an ancient ceremony where nine marks are burned onto the head with sticks of incense. In 2007 the Chinese government partially lifted the 300-year ban of the Jieba allowing the the mentally and physically prepared to participate in the ancient tradition. Incense or moxa was used on top of the shaved head and burned in a ceremony of dedication to the Shaolin Si temple/monastery by the most skilled of martial artists. WHY THE DRAGON SYMBOL WAS USED BY SHAOLIN MONKS: The top of the map show the dragon as a symbol of the Shaolin Si. In China the dragon is the first of twelve zodiac animals and is the most powerful of all and represents the ultimate and greatest of all powers known. It is also the one and only legendary animal in the zodiac the rest are actual animals. Because this map was conceived of carved and printed at the Shaolin Xi monastery or temple by these very priests they put the most powerful symbol at the top a dragon. The symbolic meaning indicated that China was superior to all other nations. It was also a private pun by the Shaolin priests indicating for all to see and know that the Shaolin temple and its priests were above all others. Additionally it reminded and indicated that the Shaolin priest were the most powerful martial artists and covert political force in all China. . RARITY: The original Chinese edition has been exceptionally obscure and impossible to come by for over the last two-hundred years and is believed now to be lost to posterity. Shaolin Si temple/monastery imprints are very R A R E ! Few references or examples exist of their woodblock printed works. This edition was a copy of the original re-carved by the Japanese and reissued. Not only is this map of great interest to Chan Zen Buddhists Shaolin Kung-fu collectors martial artists and historians but to students of Chinese cartography collectors and museums. . CONDITION: The map has been professionally re-backed in its distant past due to the large amount of old worming. It is now solid and stable. Because of the rarity of this work a complete map found in any condition would be now considered exceptionally R A R E ! Please review images posted to our website to observe the restored condition. . THE COVERS: The map has been rebound in non-original paper covers perhaps about 100 years ago. It is contained in a brown cloth Chuan Chitsu folding slipcase with ivory clasps cloth a bit faded one edge a bit worn else clean & solid. . THE SCANS: While we have made efforts to take good digital photographs and scans of our copy due to the exceptionally large size of the map these photos are not of the highest quality. We therefore are additionally using copies of this map from the Oda reference book illustrations as samples of what the map is like. Please note the following digital images are from Oda: cover.jpg illus08.jpg & illus12.jpg the balance are from our digital camera. . Any client who purchases this map may be interested in the Japanese text found in Oda. Upon request we are happy to provide a copy of his entry. . BIBLIOGRAPHY: G. 19972381997. Lin Jian.

ABOUT THE ART

Acclaimed and immensely talented Chinese artist renowned and collected all over the world for his Realism and Hyperrealism masterpieces. This is one of the finest examples of his celebrated work.

Painted circa 1990-2000. Oil on canvas. Provenance: This was a commissioned piece by an American fine art collector so he signed his name in English versus the traditional Chinese characters he traditionally employs when selling to the Chinese market.

The painting is the finest landscape I’ve ever had the pleasure to own and sell: The attention to detail technical mastery of scale perspective detail use of space balanced aesthetic of the composition use of both light and shadow and realistic portrayal of rocky mountaintops and snow the latter extraordinarily hard to achieve is masterful.

The art is in excellent condition - just a few areas of natural craquelure. NOTE: the painting was up against a chair when I took a picture of the back of the canvas. There is no dent. The frame is in excellent as-new condition.

I recently commissioned for this custom Italian brown-gilt wood frame to be hand-constructed for this spectacular painting to complement and augment the colors of the mountains and the shimmering sun reflecting off the craggy mountains and wind-swept snow.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Lin Jian was born in 1973 in Fujian Province located in the Southeastern part of China. He began to paint when he was only four years old and graduated from Xu Beihong Fine Arts Institute. For many years he has devoted himself to oil painting the Yellow River - his most revered and sought work in China. With each of these works of art through the beautiful scenery of Yellow River Lin Jian displays the Chinese spirits and history and expresses his devotion for the mother river. His paintings are warmly welcomed and highly collected throughout the soles particularly in mainland China Taiwan Hong Kong and the United States.

In 1996 Lin travelled throughout the US and took many photographs of the places he wanted to paint. 1967151615Beijing: Beijing mangwen chubanshe 1967. A scarce Braille edition of the revolutionary wisdom of Mao's "closest comrade in arms" First edition in Braille first printing one of 500 copies of this collection of sayings by Lin published to ensure nobody was exempt from his burgeoning cult of personality. Editions of Lin's writings transformed him into China's number two fountain of ideological wisdom with a power base that would eventually rival that of Mao himself. Scarce with no copies recorded institutionally. The Chinese government had introduced a uniform Chinese Braille system in 1953 and by the mid-1970s there were over 170 organisations in China catering to the blind which all required copies of the latest propaganda publications. At the beginning of the Cultural Revolution Beijing mangwen chubanshe Beijing Braille Press was one of just two publishers in the country with the facilities to produce Braille books and it shouldered the task of producing the majority of translations including the present work. The high cost of production for works in Braille due to the large quantity of paper required was subsidized by the state rather than passed on to customers through the retail price demonstrating the state's determination to ensure that the Cultural Revolution's cult of personality touched all state subjects. This selection of quotations from Lin was first published in Chinese the preceding year. As the driving force behind the growth of the Mao cult Lin Biao inevitably accrued a level of political power and influence that left him in day-to-day control of a large swathe of China's government and party bureaucracy. His policy statements and speeches received extensive coverage in state media while at rallies and political meetings he wielded political legitimacy flowing from his unique association with Mao. As Lin's status as Mao's chosen successor grew so did his cult with collections of his speeches and utterances printed to further study of his contribution to the Cultural Revolution's various ideological "breakthroughs". Eventually Lin's personal prestige became too much for Mao. In 1971 he mysteriously died in a plane crash while fleeing with his family to the Soviet Union. Overnight he vanished from the history books. 2 vols quarto. Original brown card wrappers title and five-pointed star to spines and front covers in red. Housed in custom red cloth folding cases. Wrappers marked and with some paste-staining stain to margins of first and last few leaves in vol. II contents otherwise clean. Overall a very good copy of this poorly produced book. hardcover

6797Many full-page woodcut illus. Nine columns per page; 20 characters per column. 21; 32 folding leaves. Two vols. incl. addendum. 8vo orig. wrappers remains of block-printed title labels on upper covers. Osaka: Bun'eido 19th century or earlier. This book presents several mysteries. The title-page states "Seppu shoshi Bun'eido shi" "Osaka publisher Bun'eido published this book". In spite of this the book has all the qualities of a Chinese publication: the text paper and wrappers are clearly Chinese. There is no colophon. It would seem that this book was printed in China for the Japanese market. The history of the literati scholar in China dates back to the Tang and Song dynasties A.D. 618-907 and 960-1279 respectively when the court implemented meritocratic civil exams for the selection of bureaucratic officials. The tests assessed the candidates' knowledge and ability in a wide range of subjects including Confucian thought law agriculture and the arts especially calligraphy painting and music. An entire class of intellectual and artistically trained scholars was thus created many of whom built studios filled with beautiful calligraphy and painting tools furniture musical instruments implements for preparing and consuming tea and wine and antiques. The two authors Lin active 13th century and Luo active 1254 compiled this collection of instruments and objects necessary for the studios of the fashionable literati connoisseurs well-versed in all the arts. The text originally appeared as part of the great Shou fu a large anthology of philosophical works commentaries on poetry and essays on culture. The verso of each folding leaf has a full-page woodcut of an instrument used in calligraphy and painting: a brush with cap cake of ink paper in rolls an inkwell a vessel to hold water shells and minerals to be admired a knife rulers scissors a seal a tray to hold instruments a container to hold red ink for corrections screens a light source a box to carry brushes brooms stone weights needles used in binding a board game an ornate antique sword a mirror bow and arrows utensils to prepare pigments arm rests and a number that we cannot determine. On the respective following recto page is a description of each object. The addendum in the second volume was written by Yuanqing Gu 1487-1565 a bibliophile from today's Changzhu in Jiangsu province. He had a large collection of books and was the editor of a treatise on tea by Chunnian Qian active ca. 1530-35. In this section of the book the format changes and has images on the verso with explanatory text on the facing pages. There are illustrations of screens porcelains ornate fly swatters a flute a cane a jade bell an inkwell etc. Nice set of an extremely rare book; we find another set at Kyushu University only. The wrappers of each volume are wormed with careful repairs. The first and final few leaves of Vol. I have some mostly marginal worming. Vol. II has some unimportant worming. unknown books

185343554Tacubaya 1853. First edition. Loose leaves disbound from a later made-up volume. Overall very good. 77 pp. on 43 leaves some folded. Folio. Beginning on June 1 1853 shortly after Santa Anna's return to Mexico as dictator and ending December 29 1853 just two weeks after he extended his rule indefinitely and had himself given the title of "most serene highness" these documents cover a period of three leaders in the Ministry of War and Navy: Jose Maria Tornel y Mendivil Juan Suárez y Navarro and Lino J. Alcorta; all prominent santannistas. Eight are issued by Tornel the most federalist of Santa Anna's advisors who fell ill and died in September 1853; ten are issued by Juan Suárez y Navarro chief administrator of the Ministry of War -the first document noting "por enfermedad de su S. E. J. Suarez Navarro" on September 10th- who coveted the position as Minster of War and Navy but broke with Santa Anna just three weeks later when Lino J. Alcorta was appointed minister in his stead and who issued the remaining twenty- nine documents. Thirteen of the documents are printed; 34 are in manuscript either originals or perhaps manuscripts reproduced by an early form heliography. Similar documents were described by Dr. W. Michael Mathes in a 2004 auction catalogue as "an early form of holography i.e. heliography using a concentrated beam of sunlight to transfer text a process employed in Mexico during a brief period between 1850 and 1856 for short runs and to avoid printing delays and costs. Lithography was impractical for such short-run imprints as it was extraordinarily costly took weeks and presented difficulties in reproducing the writer’s hand." In a few instances the date on the manuscript documents differs from that of the later publication. The documents are primarily concerned with bringing professionalism and discipline to the army and the nation stemming desertions and bolstering the draft though exempting indigenous peoples punishing theft and corruption building fortifications and other public works increasing weaponry and creating militias. OCLC locates no copies of any of these individual documents though some of the printed items are held at Berkeley and except for the auction noted above we could find no listings catalogue holdings or auction records for items reproduced in a similar fashion to those included. 179
Collection of seven pieces of incoming correspondence on thirteen sheets primarily related to the missionary career of Alonzo Eugene Austin 1837-1915 in Sitka Alaska including a letter from a young Tlingit woman and former pupil Olinda James Bailey along with a remarkable letter entirely in Chinese related to the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church apparently composed by two Chinese Christians at the time of their departure from New York in 1899 and likely retained as a curio by the Austin family.

Alonzo E. Austin served as Presbyterian missionary in Sitka Alaska from between 1879 to 1898 before returning to New York. While in Sitka Austin and his daughter Olinda became the first teachers at a local school in Sitka which became the predecessor to the Sitka Industrial and Training School having first instructed Russian children before reopening the school for Alaska Natives. The present archive is largely related to Austin's work in Sitka and includes an 1893 letter from The Board of Home Missions related to the church an 1898 three page letter from Selma Peterson a Scandinavian missionary in Alaska and a 1915 letter from the Woman's Board of Home Missions with a partial list of names of Austin's students from Sitka related to a photograph taken there which has been added to by Austin's daughter Charlotte Hall.

The most significant piece related to Austin's work in Sitka is a letter sent to him in 1910 by a former Alaska Native student Olinda James 1890-1978 who was likely named for Austin's daughter and fellow teacher Olinda Austin Ayers. James' letter is a striking testament to the continued closeness between a former missionary educator and a young Tlingit woman. James writes of having just received a photograph sent to her by the Austins: "I got the picture you send me I am more than glad to get get it I thought it was only a dream when I got it." She goes on to briefly reminisce about having spent "five years four months" in school and asks Austin if he remembers a fellow student Lizzie Kadashan who recently married Olinda's brother Ray James.

Included in this collection is the aforementioned letter entirely in Chinese by Lin Dezhi Lin Lianfang æž—å¾·æ¤ èŽ²èŠ³ å—付 written in February 1899 apparently to members of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church on their departure from New York. A translation of the letter is as follows:

May God grant us grace and blessings. Gentlemen as leaders of our church brethren may you guide us to do more good deeds bear more good fruit and receive the Lord's favor. During each prayer please pray on my behalf for a safe journey. Here I bid farewell to my dear elder brothers. May you also receive God's protection and have a safe journey when you return to your hometowns. Wherever you may be may you do more good deeds receive the Lord's blessings prosper in wealth thrive in business and soon welcome better times. This is my heartfelt wish. I kindly request that you brothers pass this letter on to Mr. Dao. I would be most grateful. I plan to set sail on the twelfth day of the second month of the Tang calendar which is Thursday. After receiving this letter please pray to the Lord for blessings on my behalf. This is my greatest hope. At the same time I wish you all well. To the brothers of the Presbyterian Church on 55th Street please also take note.
February 10 1899
Your brother
Lin Dezhi Lin Lianfang

This bookseller has been unable to trace any record of the author or the Mr. Dao referred to in the letter. Given that the letter is addressed in such a way that he would have then been staying with the recipients of the letter before his departure it is likeliest that these recipients would have been in New York and related to Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church which is mentioned at the end especially as the letter was retained in a New York family collection. The recipients could well have been other Chinese Christians then staying in New York or the letter could also have been a ceremonial present to given before departure to non-Chinese missionary hosts.

In all the collection represents an important record of one missionary's life and his connections to the Pacific world both indigenous and East Asian. Letters by Alaska Natives from this period are scarce both in commerce and in public archives as are letters in Chinese by Chinese Christians while in the United States.
