Stiff red card folder a loose portfolio of 16 black & white photos on stiff card11.5 x 17 cm. each very clean solid examples cover folder worn on folds & corners else solid. RARE EXAMPLE THE COMPLETE SET ! . . . A GROUP OF 16 MAO ZEDONG & LIN BIAO PHOTOGRAPHS . . . CONTAINED IN THE ORIGINAL RED SMALL FOLDING PORTFOLIO . . This is a fascinating group of black & white photographs showing Chairman Mao and Marshal Lin Biao. . The photographs also document the 11th PLENARY SESSION meeting of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China August 1-12 1966 at Beijing. . Significance: It approved the Decision of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party Concerning the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution setting the course for the Cultural Revolution which had started in May. The Politburo Standing Committee was expanded from 7 to 11 members with Lin Biao as the single Vice-Chairman and Liu Shaoqi severely demoted. . On August 18th 1966 the results of the Plenary Session meeting were made evident at the mass Beijing rally in Tiananmen Square when Chairman Mao and Marshall Lin met greeted welcomed and sanctioned the beginning of the WENHUA DA GEMING CULTURAL REVOLUTION. Mao Zedong met with Song Binbin a leader of the HONG WEI BING RED GUARDS. At that historic meeting a young girl put a "HONG WEI BING" arm band on Chairman Mao thus the Cultural Revolution was under way encouraged and officially approved by both Mao & Lin. . Soon thereafter chaos reigned through China as these energetic youths raved the country with purges demolishment of old cemeteries "Kangaroo Court" style trials of landlords intellectuals and others who did not 'toe the revolutionary line." . THE COVER SLOGAN: This work is contained in a red-folded card it is a small portfolio style format. The cover shows the famous and iconic calligraphic slogan written by Lin Biao serving the "Red Guards" during the WENHUA DA GEMING Cultural Revolution. The slogan reads: . "Women wei da de dao shi wei da de ling xiu wei da de tong shuai wei da de duo shou Mao zhu xi wan sui wan sui ! Wan Wan Sui. Lin Biao 1976." . "OUR GREAT MENTOR GREAT LEADER GREAT COMMANDER LONG LIVE THE GREAT HELMSMAN CHAIRMAN MAO LONG LIVE ! LONG LONG LIVE ! Lin Biao 1976." . This famous LIN slogan is the most often used in Mao's Hong Bao Shu Little Red Books as one of the frontispieces or as cover to books and also found on book slipcases. . It was the most ubiquitous and "iconic" slogan of the Hong Wei Bing Red Guards commonly found on such items as: shoulder bags flags & banners Mao pins & badges scarfs ceramics and large numbers of Hong Bao Shu Mao's Little Red Books. and books by Lin Biao or books with his contribution. See more below vis-a-vis Lin Biao. . LIN BIAO 1907-1971: . Lin became instrumental in creating the foundations for Mao Zedong's cult of personality in the early 1960s and was rewarded for his service in the Cultural Revolution by being named Mao's designated successor as the sole Vice Chairman of the Communist Party of China from 1966 until his death. . Lin was also the creator of the "HONG BAO SHU" "LITTLE RED BOOK" phenomenon consisting of any small book containing the words of either Mao or Lin including slogans. These kinds of "HONG BAO SHU" were religiously carried by Hong Wei Bing to mass rallies in Tiananmen Square on the march in the street and at during demonstrations invoking these leaders words and taunting citizens throughout China. . Often these books were contained in a small red cotton cloth shoulder purse that had yellow-stenciled slogans & images of these two leaders. . Lin & Chairman Mao welcomed and greeted a mass rally in Tiananmen Square in 1966 by the HONG WEI BING RED GUARDS. These two great leaders sanctioned and endorsed the RED GUARDS to begin the WEN HUA DA GEMING CULTURAL REVOLUTION and were officially authorized to "cleanse society" of counter-revolutionary thoughts landlords intellectuals and any others who represented anything less than the new wave of revolutionary thoughts and actions. Chaos reigned for nearly ten years. . Chairman Mao assigned Lin Biao as the leader of the Hong Wei Bing thereafter he focused his attention to leading and Bing guiding these youths who quickly got out of control wreaking havoc throughout the country. . A young woman at the rally pinned a "HONG WEI BING" armband on Chairman Mao thus showing Mao's support and authorization for the Cultural Revolution. This has become an iconic photograph. . Lin died in September 13 1971 the exact events of this "Lin Biao incident" have been a source of speculation ever since. The Chinese government's official explanation is that Lin and his family attempted to flee following a botched coup against Mao. Others have argued that they fled out of fear they would be purged as Lin's relationship with other Communist Party leaders. . Following Lin's death he was officially condemned as a traitor by the Communist Party and was labeled a major "counter-revolutionary forces" of the Cultural Revolution receiving official blame from the Chinese government. . At that time Lin's name was officially ordered expunged from all public places his books were either defaced removing his name photo and signature. A very large majority of his works were destroyed or defaced. Finding a book by Lin or books with his calligraphic slogans and signature are now RARE and difficult to find. Millions were destroyed. . Upon Mao's death the Cultural Revolution was officially ordered to stop however being in 'motion' it took another two years for it to end. . CONTENTS OF THE PHOTOS: . 1-7. 11th PLENARY SESSION: Photos of Mao & Lin 8. Marshal Lin 9-14. Mass rally in Tiananmen Square August 18 1966 15. Zhou Enlai greeting Mao at the airport. 16.
