This extremely rare variant copy includes the text "Nach Original-Skizzen von E. R. Barteau" lithographed in blue on the cover plate. A splendid production. The beautiful plates are printed with rich, dense colours and excellent gloss. An authoritative manual on chromolithography in 1885 (Colour and Colour Printing, by W. D. Richmond) asserts the need for at least 9 separate stones to achieve such richness, but in fact the number of stones used was often more than 20. Colas 230 .
