br.
Sm. 8vo., First Edition, with frontispiece (original tissue guard present), 5 plates and plans, large folding coloured map at end, and front endpaper map; original series binding of red cloth, upper board blocked in blind, gilt back, a very good, bright, clean copy. SCARCE.
Sm. 8vo., First Edition, with a frontispiece, 15 plates on 14, 93 illustrations (11 full-page) and 10 plans (9 full-page) in the text, front endpaper maps and rear endpaper plan; cloth gilt, gilt back, endpapers a little browned else a very good, clean copy in the dustwrapper, the latter with some slight foxing. This work, which deserves wider recognition, is arguably one of the best of the pre-War travellers' guides to its subject. Each individual location is placed in its architectural and clerical context in a readable manner while the glossary is charmingly illustrated and surprisingly compendious. The 10 full-page illustrations of key architectural features act as a valuable ready reference, a precursor of the achievements of Pevsner and his school yet to come.
