1890288415Lynchburg Va: W. A. Miller & Son 1890. An autograph letter signed from the farming supplies company W. A. Miller & Son to Mr. Chas. Palmer who is either a farmer or seed dealer. The author of W. A. Miller & Son is contacting the farmer in reference to their ensilage corn; W. A. Miller has seen 'Blount's White Prolific or Mammoth Ensilage Corn' heavily advertised and certain "Western Northwestern Parties" have asked for the same to be furnished for them. W. A. Miller goes on to ask the farmer the history of their ensilage corn and whether they could send samples of it or if they would be willing to attempt to crossbreed theirs with another variety. W. A. Miller was established in Lynchburg Va. and the letter is dated 1890. Two leaves of company letterhead lightly creased and edgeworn with two hole punches at the top edge. W. A. Philadelphia was a large candy-making center in the 19th and 20th centuries. Philadelphia grew from having just four confectioners in 1800 to 117 large-scale wholesalers 418 retailers and 1011 places listed as corner candy stores just a century later. Folding facsimile letter by Turner and 2 additional facsimile Turner letters. Mostly a clean copy though is a bit of quite scattered foxing; the plates appear clean. In publisher's bright green embossed cloth with faded gilt stamping of a rather charming fountain to the front board and titling to the spine. William Rickarby Miller 1818-1893 was born in England and emigrated to America in 1844 making his home in New York City. He was noted for his landscape paintings and watercolors as well as his illustrations for books and periodicals. He was mostly occupied during the last twenty years of his life in the execution of pen and ink sketches for his project "1000 Gems of American Landscape." Provenance: Private English Collection. And the company furthermore agree that they will keep in proper repair the building the holders and tanks the hydraulic mains washers etc.; and that Miller agrees to make all the necessary repairs on the street mains and agrees to pay $2500 "for a consumption of two and one half million feet" and $3000 "for a consumption of three million feet per annum and a pro-rated rate for any amount between the amounts named." <br/><br/> April 18 unknown books

A 12mo of 7 1/4 by 5 inches with the cloth at the head of the spine worn down to the text block and shelf wear to the cloth at the lower edges of the boards. The first signature has a sewing thread exposed and there is an early gift inscription in pencil on the second free end page. The pages show spots of foxing throughout. Without a dust jacket. 129 pages of text followed by 12 pages of publisher's ads. Illustrated with 36 vignettes from engravings by an unknown artist. Of note are the bright marbled end pages.
