1984024138Greenwood Press 1984. Book. Very Good Edges foxed. Hardcover. Inscribed by Authors. 1st Edition. This is the first biography written about Judge J. Skelly Wright a United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and previously a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Wright is recognized for exerting a major influence on American landlord-tenant law. Several of his decisions on the D.C. Circuit helped modernize landlord-tenant jurisprudence by incorporating consumer protection principles long accepted in contract law. The J. Skelly Wright Professorship at Yale Law School is named in his honor. The book is inscribed by the author Arthur Selwyn Miller. Miller was a professor of constitutional law at the National Law Center of the George Washington University Law School in Washington from 1961 to 1978. He often testified at congressional hearings and was a consultant to a succession of congressional and presidential committees. One of Miller's consulting roles was for Senator Sam Ervin Jr. the North Carolina Democrat who was chairman of the Senate Select Committee to Investigate Presidential Campaign Practices which looked into the Watergate affair and other elements of the 1972 presidential election. It is inscribed to Henry Julian Abraham a German-born American scholar of judiciary and constitutional law. Abraham was James Hart Professor of Government Emeritus at the University of Virginia. He authored 13 books most in multiple editions and more than 100 articles on the U.S. Supreme Court judicial appointments judicial process and civil rights and liberties. A very nice copy with some pencil notes and underlinings in a very nice lightly edge-worn dust jacket. Laid in is a one-page typed letter to Abraham dated 11/29/84 and signed in the same green ink as the book's inscription in which he thanks Abraham in advance for a book the latter was planning to send. Also stapled to this letter is a typed letter signed from Henry Commager to Arthur Selwyn Miller in which Commager discusses having received Miller's previous letter and articles and read them with immense pleasure. Commager remarks "How interesting that we should make much of the same arguments and even cite some of the same candidates for membership on the court.who might be appointed by Pres. Reagan I fear the first appt. will be Bork-something of a calamity." Miller had forwarded the letter from Commager to Abraham saying "Commager must be mellowing" and proposing a theory that "some of the world's less delightful people" "sons-of-bitches" as they grow older may begin "to feel the cold wind blow across his headstone." Also laid in is a copy of the reply Abraham sent to Miller thanking him for the book and praising its "warm perceptive expert analysis and evaluation." A great association copy with some wonderful insight and gossip. Greenwood Press Hardcover
