NOW VERY LITTLE KNOWN THIS SCARCE AND GIGANTIC AMERICAN BOOK CATALOGUE WAS ONE OF THE VEHICLES FOR A NOTORIOUS AND LITIGIOUS PYRAMID SCHEME WHICH HAS SOME SEMBLANCE TO TODAY'S SUBSCRIPTION BOOK CLUBS. <br /> <br /> The perpetrator was a shadowy figure name George W. Borland 1851 or 1852-1931 of Chicago; according to legal records he was frequently sued and lost; after filing for bankruptcy he simply reformed his companies under different names. <br /> <br /> Borland claimed that his subscription services eliminated the middlemen and as the present amazing "stock catalogue" shows his firm offered to members desirable books published by Harper Brothers Appleton Scribner's Houghton Mifflin Lippincott and many others at slashed prices. In order to achieve such savings his National Library Association continually recruited new members who had to pay the so-called "subscription fee" and were enticed with discounts and prizes to recruit friends families schools libraries church congregations etc. <br /> <br /> Apparently Borland and his cohorts were complete scam artists; in the year 1884 alone Borland et al. were the subjects of major lawsuits the judgments of which resulted in massive losses approximately $100000 = $3.5 million today. Consequently these crooks simply reformed under another name and relaunched their enterprise. Contemporary newspaper and legal records show that Borland continued to lose cases from creditors such as Bradner Smith & Co. in 1891 -- the year in which the present catalogue was issued -- the judgment was $1491. In 1896 after the name was changed to National Merchants' Supply Co. he was forced into bankruptcy following by a lawsuit from Felix Marston & Co. <br /> <br /> Sidney Huttner in his innovative "Lucile Project" describes some of the consequences of Borland's dubious activities including his involvement with the National Library Association. In its hall-of-shame "Trade Embarrassements" column in Bradstreet's Weekly: A Business Digest vol. 10 July 5 1884 p. 13 Borland's name appears not once but three times: <br /> 1. G.W. Borland & Co. book publishers assigned to W. N. Lee having previously confessed five judgments for $40439.<br /> 2. Chicago Installment Book Co. and George W. Borland & Co. the proprietors of it closed by sheriff on confessed judgments for $40690 and both assigned to W. N. Lee.<br /> 3. Fairbanks Palmer & Co. publishers closed by sheriff. It is said they held papers of G. W. He was also a noted collector of antique books and nowadays there is a great deal of artistic appreciation directed towards his personal bookplate. It was illustrated by F.C. Papé as a tribute to Wheatley's mentor Gordon Eric Gordon-Tombe; in his design Gordon Eric is depicted as a satyr seated on a stump beside a bottle of champagne and a saxophone as he delivers some words of wisdom to a young man based on Wheatley himself. Lengthy note in pencil to first blank referring to Alderman Hornby's manuscript and small marginal note in pencil to p. 69; original wraps lightly soiled; scattered light foxing almost exclusively to endpapers. Spine sunned otherwise a very clean copy. The defence of the Corporation of Newcastle in reply to charges brought against them by Ralph Gardiner in 1653 transcribed from a manuscript in the possession of Alderman Hugh Hornby but previously unpublished. Gardiner's diatribe against the draconian control of the coal trade on the River Tyne was full of accusations of the misuse of the Royal Charter and corruption and the publication of the Conservatorship manuscript enabled readers to view both sides of the heated argument. This is the very last of Richardson's tracts; rare the title-page states that only 150 copies were printed. Jisc locates just one institutional copy at the University of Leicester. Born and raised in Anderson County Kentucky Wiley Searcy reached maturity just as the Civil War was beginning. Kentucky citizens were torn between North and South in their loyalties. For unrecorded reasons the Searcys chose the Union side. Few soldiers on either side saw as much action as Searcy did in the process rising from a lowly private to the rank of captain. Searcy mustered out in 1869 returning to his home in Kentucky. In 1886 Searcy is recorded as having purchased a distillery that had been established in Anderson County in 1818 by Joe Peyton widely known as "Old Joe." The distillery would eventually bear his name . the Wiley Searcy Distillery. Under Searcy’s leadership the distillery flourished. In 1909 as occurred many times for distilleries fire ravaged the complex destroying all three warehouses. The loss of whiskey was considerable. Searcy by now 66 years old and perhaps feeling the effects of his wartime wounds declined to rebuild and instead sold the property to the local Ripy Brothers in 1911. Very minor wear to top edges along with aged tanning to rear else fine condition. A very attractive advertising piece. N.D. (ca 1886). unknown

Language learning at China's premier banking institution A connection to the late Qing dynasty and the Legation Era: a banker's vocabulary list for learning spoken and written Chinese produced during the tenure of HSBC's legendary Peking agent Edward "Guy" Hillier when political upheavals brought new diplomatic stresses and economic opportunities for China's largest foreign bank. The ledgers from which this example is formed were only produced between 1890 and 1910. HSBC entered the China market in Hong Kong in 1865 and because Chinese reformers began to look for more foreign investment in government projects it established a Peking office in the Legation Quarter in the 1880s. Quickly Guy Hillier 1857-1924 was drafted to lead operations. Fluent in Chinese Hillier was the bank's chief representative in the Chinese capital from 1891 to 1924 although he managed to avoid be out of the city during the Boxer Uprising. "Hillier tested the very limits of the 'treaty system' establishing close relations both with modernizing compradores and with imperial officials. It was Hillier's genius to understand the politics of the foreign diplomatic community to learn what was possible in the London market to determine what was acceptable politically in China and to match all three - on terms to the benefit of the Hongkong Bank its associate companies and indeed the general British position in China" ODNB. Hillier needed well-trained multilingual staff to handle HSBC's growing involvement in loan negotiations. This manual containing over 1000 entries suits this purpose combining English words with their Chinese character equivalents and a romanized form with tone numbers for pronunciation purposes. Fittingly for a banker it begins with numbers from 1 to 100000 and their simple logic the number "20" for example being formed from the characters "2" and "10". The contents is then arranged alphabetically by romanization and ranges from the essential "you" and "quick" to the complex "camel" and "deaf". The final two pages contain a list of common fruits and vegetables in English and romanized Chinese. The regular stiff form of the Chinese characters as well as the inclusion of serifs on strokes echoes the songti fonts found in many contemporary western works on China and suggests that the writer was a learner copying directly and cautiously from a printed dictionary rather than an experienced linguist producing the manual for a colleague. Several leaves see the learner tackle the complexities of words and sentences formed from multiple characters. "Bicycle" for example is explained as the combination of the Chinese characters for "self" "proceed" and "carriage" while "woo yuan woo koo dee" is given for the phrase "without cause of reason". Over the page they pair such phrases such as as "I tomorrow give you money" and "Have fish fresh not have" with their romanization indicative of attempts to get to grips with the logical distinctions between Chinese and English syntax. Also given is a list of countries with their Chinese pronunciations - with the exception of America Russia and Japan these are all European nations. The compiler's identity remains unknown. Fourteen individuals worked in HSBC's Peking office under Hillier between 1895 and 1908. This manuscript bears all the hallmarks of one of these bankers cutting their linguistic teeth in the complex atmosphere of late-imperial Peking. Octavo 210 x 133 mm ff. 72. Formed from 3 ledgers each with red edges and and 12 bifolia ruled in red on recto the opening bifolium of each ledger with Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Peking letterhead printed in black all bound into wrappers with cord. This collection of proceedings by the Bunhill Fields Preservation Committee documents the Corporation of London's efforts to ensure the safety of the Bunhill Fields Burial Ground as the Corporation's lease was nearing its end Christmas 1867. Bunhill had been a burying ground of Nonconformists and other denominations since the sixteenth century. With the work of the committee the Corporation obtained an Act of Parliament in 1867 preserving the burial ground as an open landscaped space with seating gardens and the restoration of some of it most noteworthy monuments including John Bunyan Daniel Defoe and William Blake. The appendix contains a reprint of a rare tract from 1717 "Inscription on the Tombs in the Dissenters' Burial Place near Bunhill Fields." Some wear to edges of binding else fine. unknown
