Once bound in with other similar pamphlets these three related items are unbound and removed with stab marks along the left edges. The pagination is a follows: pages 1-11 1 & 13-21 1-8; and 1-12. There is some scattered foxing throughout all three items. The cover page of the Senate No. 10 report dated December 15 1829 is darkened & stained with minor chipping to the bottom corners of that page and of the last page. Very good.</p><p>First edition Massachusetts Senate No. 21. The report is signed on page 11 by John W. Lincoln Chairman. The report is followed by the text of a bill entitled "An act to establish the Boston and Lowell Rail Road Corporation."</p><p>The Boston and Lowell Railroad was the first major railroad in the state of Massachusetts. The Boston and Lowell Railroad was preceded by the Middlesex Canal. Converting the canal to a railroad would eliminate the issue of transportation being unavailable during the winter when the canal froze. Patrick Tracy Jackson led the task of convincing the state legislature to fund the project. This proved difficult as the investors of the Middlesex Canal were against building a new form of transportation designed to replace their canal. The report at hand details the protest of the directors of the Middlesex Canal against granting the petition of John F. Loring and others to construct a railroad in its place. Loring and the other investors received their charter on June 5 1830 and the railroad began operations on June 24 1835.</p><p>The pamphlet is accompanied by an earlier February 12 1830 pamphlet titled:"To the Honorable the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled. : The president directors and company of the Middlesex Canal having seen the publication of the petition of John F. Loring and others for a rail road from Boston to Lowell and the order of notice thereon beg leave to present the following remonstrance to granting the prayer thereof." 12 pages. Signed page 12: Wm. Sullivan Josh. Coolidge Geo. Hallet committee of directors of Middlesex Canal to this purpose duly authorized. House No. 40 printed by Dutton and Wentworth 1830.</p><p>In addition an earlier pamphlet from 1829 is included: "Boston December 15 1829. The opinion delineates responsibilities of the banks and individuals who are the contract guarantors and cites precedence relating examples and giving the chronology of the case in hand. Lengthy note in pencil to first blank referring to Alderman Hornby's manuscript and small marginal note in pencil to p. 69; original wraps lightly soiled; scattered light foxing almost exclusively to endpapers. Spine sunned otherwise a very clean copy. The defence of the Corporation of Newcastle in reply to charges brought against them by Ralph Gardiner in 1653 transcribed from a manuscript in the possession of Alderman Hugh Hornby but previously unpublished. Gardiner's diatribe against the draconian control of the coal trade on the River Tyne was full of accusations of the misuse of the Royal Charter and corruption and the publication of the Conservatorship manuscript enabled readers to view both sides of the heated argument. This is the very last of Richardson's tracts; rare the title-page states that only 150 copies were printed. Jisc locates just one institutional copy at the University of Leicester. With complete index.<br/><br/>Bookplate reveals that this book is from the collection of Dennis Wheatley 1897-1977 a best-selling English author of thrillers many with an occult or "black magic" theme e.g. The Devil Rides Out 1934. He was also a noted collector of antique books and nowadays there is a great deal of artistic appreciation directed towards his personal bookplate. It was illustrated by F.C. Papé as a tribute to Wheatley's mentor Gordon Eric Gordon-Tombe; in his design Gordon Eric is depicted as a satyr seated on a stump beside a bottle of champagne and a saxophone as he delivers some words of wisdom to a young man based on Wheatley himself. FFEP and the following title pages have a small tear and some wrinkles caused by paper clips. All three fold-out diagrams are present. One is on the tail section and the other two are a front view and a side view. A handbook of the workings of the Curtiss Standard JN4-D Military Tractor. Contents include specifications examination of parts general construction flying landing tables and more. 20 vintage B & W plates. The Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny" was one of a series of "JN" biplanes built by the Curtiss Aeroplane Company of Hammondsport New York later the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company. Although the Curtiss JN series was originally produced as a training aircraft for the U.S. Army the “Jenny" continued after World War I as a civil aircraft as it became the "backbone of American postwar civil aviation." Thousands of surplus Jennys were sold at bargain prices to private owners in the years after the war and became central to the barnstorming era that helped awaken the U.S. to civil aviation through much of the 1920s. Laid in is a letter from Herb Youngblood of the Engineering Department of the Hyatt Roller Bearing Co of Detroit Mich on the company Stationery to Mr. J. D. Roach at Selfridge Field Mt Clemens Mich. The letter is about this booklet and is hoped to be of some assistance in preparing a similar booklet for the Hispano-Suiza Motor Company. Also mentions fishing in Walled Lake. This is a great business/personal letter concerning this booklet written by and to a fellow colleague in early Aviation circles. A very nice vintage aeronautical piece with great ephemera.
