Octavo. 32pp. Large folding wood-engraved frontispiece; 38 wood-engraved illustrations of silhouette profiles one map and two illustrations. In the original plain pale purple wrappers. Wrapper lightly toned a few small chips spine mostly perished with some glue residue along the spine. Scattered light foxing and slight offsetting from wrapper on one blank panel of the folded frontispiece and onto the final page. Very good with the striking folding frontispiece very bright and attractive. Neatly housed in a cloth chemise and quarter morocco and cloth slipcase gilt. <br /> <br /> Barber's highly important history documenting what one historian called "the most famous of all shipboard revolts" published in the same year that the New Haven court ruled that the slave traffickers had no claim on the Amistad rebels and preceding the publication of Adams and Baldwin's 1841 Supreme Court arguments. The work features Barber's famous large frontispiece engraving depicting the uprising on the ship and the death of the Amistad's captain; along with Barber's 38 engraved profiles of the Amistad rebels made during his visits to the New Haven jail where they were incarcerated. The work also features a map of Mende on the West African coast an engraving of a Mende village and an engraving of nine Amistad Africans chained in the ship bound to Cuba.<br /> <br /> In 1839 53 enslaved Africans aboard the Amistad rose up near Cuba killed the captain and one other crew member and captured their slavers José Ruiz and Pedro Montes. The new crew took control of the vessel and sailed it to Long Island where they were captured by the U.S. Navy and ultimately incarcerated in New Haven. In 1841 after a remarkable trial the Supreme Court declared the Amistad rebels free. Exceptionally uncommon. Sabin 3324; American Imprints 40-480; Library Company Afro-Americana 881. Ex-lib bookplates and ink stamps of the Norwich & Norfolk United Medical Book Society early ownership inscription of Hudson Gurney. Fine. FIRST EDITION. 19th Century French Medical Encyclopedia Possibly one of the most important encyclopedia/dictionaries of medicine ever assembled and certainly the earliest. As Diderot's encyclopedia became the model for assembling scientific knowledge this massive set brings together all that was known about medicine in the post-Napoleonic era. Included here are numerous engraved plates of surgical instruments of the period. Also illustrated are facial expressions and signs of mental abnormality many in the style of Esquirol's work. A smaller set Dictionnaire abrege des sciences medicales. . . was concurrently published however that set is only 15 volumes. In 1821-25 Panckoucke published Dictionnaire des sciences medicales Biographie medicale. . . which includes biographies of medical luminaries. Nicolas Philibert Adelon 1782-1862 and Francois Victor Merat 1780-1851 were two of the prominent contributors to this medical encyclopedia. <br /><br /> This compendious work was not included amongst the items exhibited by the Library of Congress in their Circle of Knowledge exhibition of the history of the encyclopedia. Panckoucke 1736-1798 was involved with issuing various encyclopedias beginning with Diderot's Encyclopedie which ". . . was an immediate success: a new edition was called for even before the first had been completed. C.J. Panckoucke proposed such a new edition in 1761 and bought the rights to the first seven volumes. He approached Diderot to edit a new revised edition and when Diderot refused began to reissue the original volumes. The government intervened in 1770 and seized the three which had appeared. After the death of the last of the original proprietors in 1775 Panckoucke published a five-volume supplement to the Encyclopedie and later in 1780 a two-volume index. The complete first edition comprises Diderot's twenty-eight volumes plus Panckoucke's seven; its publication spanned the years 1751-80." Circle of Knowledge 1979 p. 8. <br /><br /> Provenance: Hudson Gurney 1775-1864 was an antiquary and verse-writer of Norwich. He became an M.P. for Newtown in 1816 and sat in six successive parliaments. In 1835 he was high-sheriff of Norfolk and was elected fellow of the Society of Antiquaries 1819 was vice-president from 1822-46 a fellow of the Royal Society and a member of the British Archaeological Association. During the Civil War wounded or captured soldiers would often pass their time waiting to return to duty carving relics. The practice was fairly common with pipes being the most commonly carved object and the quality of the relics varied wildly depending on the talent of the soldier. A.H. Barber from Wisconsin was wounded at Antietam and most likely carved this memorial piece while recovering from his wounds. Each leaf notes a different battle during the 1861-1862 campaigns. Barber enlisted in Company C of the 2nd Wisconsin in 1861 and was discharged in 1863 following wounds suffered at Antietam. The trunk reads Battles for the Union and the four branches read Dept. of the South Army of Virginia & of the Potomac and Dept. of the West with twenty-nine leaves naming battles. <br /> <br /> The resultant plaque is exceptional in timeliness craftsmanship and overall aesthetic beauty. Barber's metaphorically growing tree is particularly timely for the Union cause as the 1863 failure of the Maryland Campaign would serve as inspiration to Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. Wonderfully preserved in excellent condition with no notable flaws. From the collection of Norm Flaydernman the noted Americana dealer who personally collected carved Civil War pipes and had been planning to write a book on the subject at the time of his death. unknown books

180269953Newport R.I.: Tuesday September 28 1802. Issue no. 2112. Folio approx. 18¾" x 11½" pp. 4; text in quadruple column; previous folds in quarters light staining paper a bit toned 2 or 3 tiny holes else very good. The front page prints a 2-column account from the New-York Evening Post on "Jefferson vs. Callender" concerning payments made by Jefferson to James T. Callender ostensibly to buy the latter's silence and this is followed on page 2 by an early public disclosure taken "from a Baltimore paper" of the long-term sexual "relationship" between President Thomas Jefferson and a woman enslaved to him Sally Hemings. After being refused an appointment to a postmaster position by Thomas Jefferson and issuing veiled threats of "consequences" journalist James T. Callender reported that "the President of the United States keeps and has for many years kept one of his own slaves as a concubine and that he has had several children by her." The article either by Callender himself in the third person or a political ally is signed by "One of the People." Jefferson made no public comment on the matter. The Newport Mercury founded in 1758 by Ann Smith Franklin 1696-1763 and her son James Franklin 1730-1762 the nephew of Benjamin Franklin is one of the oldest in the country. It was likely the first American newspaper edited by a woman and was also first paper to publish poetry by an African American Phillis Wheatley. The paper was published regulary up until the time of the British occupation of Newport in December 1776 and was started up again in 1780 by Solomon Southwick in partnership with Henry Barber. Barber died in 1800 and the paper continued to be published by his wife Ann whose name had appeared in the Mercury imprint as early as 1795 and later their children. Tuesday, September 28 unknown

Iambes is augmented with 3 unpublished poems and the collection Lazare appears for the first time. Contemporary half green Russian leather with corners. Smooth spine decorated with a large central decorative panel roll tool at foot. Gilt title and date. Rubbing to corners. Some pale foxing and browning. Very handsome copy. Les Iambes initially appeared in 1832 and remains the author's best-known collection which made him immediately famous and made him the spokesman for the July 1830 Revolution and one of the essential figures of Romanticism. ""This collection ranks him among the greatest combat poets between Agrippa d'Aubigné and Victor Hugo"" Laffont-Bompiani Dictionnaire des Oeuvres. Hugo said he found in Iambes ""astonishing verses that no one else will ever write again"" and Baudelaire that he was ""naturally a poet and a great poet."" The series of poems on social misery Lazare which completes the work is one of Barbier's greatest successes and makes the entire collection the most important published by the author in an inspiration that the poet for many critics would never surpass again. Full brown leather with gilt-stamped black leather spine label gilt-tooled on board edges. Owner's name inked on blank preliminary pages foxed with hints of dampstaining in margins hinges cracked leather is dry and worn and chipped a good only copy lacking the rear fly and the fold-out map. Barber a notable engraver unwittingly became the state's historian while traveling through Connecticut. He spoke to the local townspeople collected documents made sketches of important locations and buildings. This book has been called "the first popular local history published in the U.S. John W.
