Schirmer's Edition of Study Scores of Orchestral Works & Chamber Music No 32 title-page verso gives instrumentation information about first performances in Europe and the United States duration time; 97 pages full-score Opus 9 Schirmer plate number 40720 copyright 1943. This copy was signed inscribed and dated by Samuel Barber: "To my boss and friend Dan Saidenberg Samuel Barber June 1944". 26 cm. x 19 cm. The cover was de-acidified expertly conserved and mended and the book block was resewn. Now very good and a usable reading copy. A rare early inscription on an early work in the first edition to an important fellow musician when both men were in the U.S. Army. <br /><br /> Samuel Barber 1910 – 1981 was one of the most celebrated composers of the twentieth century. Barber was a triple prodigy in voice piano and composition entering the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia at age 14. Best remembered internationally for his hauntingly beautiful Adagio for Strings first championed by Arturo Toscanini his music has been used at times of national and international crisis to honor the dead and console the living. Who could ever forget Barber's music at Princess Grace's funeral The First Symphony dates from 1936 and bears the opus number 9 on the first page of the score. The first performance was by Bernardino Molinari and the Augusteo Orchestra in Rome December 13 1936. The first American performance was given by Arthur Rodzinski and the Cleveland Orchestra January 22 1937. Samuel Barber enjoyed the distinction for winning the Pulitzer Prize twice as well as distinguished commissions such as writing the opera for the opening of the new Metropolitan Opera House in 1966 <i>Anthony and Cleopatra</i>. In 1942 Barber joined the Army Air Corps. The dedicatee here is Daniel Saidenberg a violoncellist in the Philadelphia Orchestra starting in 1926 and in 1930 he was a 'cellist in the Chicago Symphony. Saidenberg was the first 'cellist to win the prestigious Walter W. Naumburg International Competition after which he pursued a solo career; and in later years he was a Manhattan gallery owner known for his sponsorship of faculty recitals at New York's Juilliard School. Dated September 22 1971 and signed by Governor Milton J. Shapp and Secretary of the Commonwealth C. Delores Tucker. Born in West Chester Pennsylvania Barber studied at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia and maintained a close link to the city throughout his life. The composer's name is hand-lettered and a gold seal with purple ribbons is affixed at the foot. One slight chip to the edge and mounting remnants on the verso; overall in fine condition. 11 x 14 inches 28 x 35.7 cm. unknown books

A fascinating and important collection of autograph letters and telegrams to the important American composer dating from the premieres of his two operas Vanessa 1958 and Antony and Cleopatra 1966. Included are autograph letters from Aaron Copland John Browning who premiered Barber's Piano Concerto Rosalind Elias the original Erika in Vanessa and Charmain in Antony and Cleopatra Ignace Strasvogel and other friends and admirers and telegrams from Leonard Bernstein Martha Graham Jerome Robbins W. H. Auden Noel Coward and many others.<br style="">While Vanessa with libretto by Menotti won Barber the 1958 Pulitzer Prize for music Antony and Cleopatra written for the opening of the new Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center was not well-received. Franco Zeffirelli chosen to write the libretto and stage the opera weighed down the production with over-the-top scenery animals and extras; technical difficulties marred the opening night. As Barber departed New York for Italy the very next morning his years of success had for the most part come to an end. The 1966 letters to Barber reflect his unhappy state with many of his friends consoling him over the bad reviews and assuring him that his music transcended the problems of staging.<br style="">Included are:<br style="">88 telegrams sending best wishes and congratulations on the première of Vanessa in 1958 sent by W. One from Roberta Peters celebrated Met coloratura thanking Barber for sending her some music mentioning that she is looking forward to learning Barber's song "Nuvoletta" and wishing him good luck for Vanessa 2 pp.; one from Eleanor Belmont a member of the Metropolitan Opera board congratulating Barber on the premiere 1 p.; and one from a music student William Gordon expressing his love for the opera and asking where he can obtain the score 1 p. typed and undated.<br style="">19 letters mostly autograph with one TLS to Barber from before and after the 1966 premiere of Antony and Cleopatra. Dated September-November 1966. Slightly toned with age a former owner has underlined one item and has laid in several handwritten pages of notes folded in half a good good-only copy.
