1961148819New York: Blue Note 1961. First stereo pressing same year as the mono release signed neatly in full by Silver in blue ballpoint on the back cover. This is a terrific live date from the famous Greenwich Village club with the classic Silver frontline of Blue Mitchell trumpet and Junior Cook tenor; Gene Taylor is the bassist and 21-year old Roy Brooks the drummer recommended by the outgoing Louis Hayes. Silver's always-exciting bands were a mainstay of the Blue Note catalogue in the 50s and 60s the label issuing around three dozen recordings. As Cook & Morton note "it's hard to pick the best of the albums since Silver's consistency is unarguable; each album yields one or two themes that haunt the mind each usually has a particularly pretty ballad and they all lay back on a deep pile of solid riffs ad workmanlike solos. Silver's own are strong enough but he was good at choosing sidemen who weren't too characterful that the band would overbalance". 12-inch vinyl LP Blue Note ST-84076 new plain white inner sleeve original inner also preserved original album cover. Only very slight shelfwear to cover otherwise very good; disc in excellent condition. Richard Cook & Brian Morton The Penguin Guide to Jazz recordings ninth edition 2008; Discogs website. unknown

1969148768New York: Blue Note 1969. Amongst the cream of the hard bop crop signed by Silver Signed cleanly by Horace Silver in full in blue ballpoint on the back cover; this album being a very desirable location for the great pianist's signature as Cook & Morton describe it as "more than any other to exemplify al his virtues as pianist composer and leader" awarding it the full four stars and the accolade of "core collection". This is the 1969 pressing of the original 1959 recording featuring Blue Mitchell trumpet Junior Cook tenor Eugene Taylor bass and Louis Hayes drums. Cook and Morton are unstinting in their praise: "The title-track goes off like a typhoon. The ten-bar ballad 'Peace' is one of Silver's most haunting and most-covered themes. 'Sister Sadie' is a soul-jazz classic which other bandleaders were quick to cover. 'The Baghdad Blues' finds him guying various kinds of jazz exoticism. And he ends the record with another version of one of his most durable pieces 'Melancholy Mood'. It's a typical Blue Note a characteristic Silver session but every part of it is powerful enough to transcend what would become clichés of the idiom; and the band all play superbly". 12-inch vinyl LP Blue Note BLP-4017 / 84017 new plain white inner sleeve original inner also preserved original album cover. WITH 24 LIVELY COLOR PLATES IN THE STYLE OF GEORGE CRUIKSHANK. Front pastedown with book label of "Beguin." Vicaire III 564. Upper cover with small dark stain spine sunned to a soft tan head of spine with small chip minor wear to front joint and corners but the binding solid and pleasant; text leaves with mild foxing due to paper quality but the plates happily unaffected and still bright with vivid coloring.

In a stylish contemporary binding and with illustrations depicting the various "characters mores and manners" of the English this humorous exploration of the highs and lows of London society is a close adaptation of Pierce Egan's enormously popular "Life in London." The present work though not a word-for-word translation closely follows Egan's original story of Tom Jerry and Logic a group of friends whose misadventures lead them from the most fashionable districts of London to its poorest slums. The wonderful illustrations show the trio taking part in all manner of mischief and merrymaking including attending a masked ball mingling in the crowded foyer of a theatre visiting a bespoke tailor taking boxing lessons carousing at a rowdy alehouse and perhaps inevitably having to appear before a constable. Though the plates are unsigned they appear to be faithful copies of those done by George and Robert Cruikshank for the original Egan work. Deriving its name from the use of design motifs taken from Gothic architecture the so-called "Cathedral Binding" or "Cathedral-Style Binding" was fashionable in England and France for about three decades beginning ca. 1810. French binder Joseph Thouvenin is sometimes credited with popularizing the style. The design is usually accomplished with either blocking or gilt tooling but sometimes both are employed in a pleasing mixture as seen here. Jules Didot l'aîné et Baudouin Frères unknown
