Fitch, George Angas (4 are botanical, others animals, birds). original blind-stamped cloth, gilt spine title lettering, cloth faded and rear internal hinge repaired, old inscription on title margin dated 1861, interior clean and near fine, excellent plates. Wood 231: 'An interesting account of the author's observations on the flora and fauna of Australasia, in which birds figure large, at least half of the 23 chapters containing references to them'. The book contains an extensive chapter on the platypus, which the author here calls a water mole, together with a hand colored plate of same. Fitch, who painted the botanical subjects, was one of the most respected botanical artists of his time. Other subjects are by artists G.F. Angas, Thomas Baines and Joseph Wolf, each a highly respected and important natural history artist. An important contribution including marine biology, ornithology, bird migration, plants including those with agricultural application, botanic garden, medicinal remedies, etc.
4to [28.5 x 23 cm]; 3 volumes, xii, 352; viii, 352; x, 370 pp, 46 fine colored lithographed (chromolithograph) on art paper, from paintings, hundreds of engraved illustrations, index. contemporary half morocco, gilt spine title lettering and gilt decorations, edges rubbed, one cover a little spotted, internal hinges re-enforced, overall very good but interior is clean and near fine with good impressions of plates. A picture of this boo The attractive colored plates are from paintings by Marie Low and Gertrude Hamilton, and the other illustrations are from drawings by F. W. Burbidge, George Shayler and May Iggulden. An impressive work with a large section on orchids and including all aspects of flower growing and all types of flowers, flowering shrubs and trees, sub-tropical growing, roses, borders, seasons, propagation, azaleas, greenhouse growing, marketing, etc. Later printings had no date on preface and some were bound in 6 volumes instead of three but with same content.

23138Book first published 1846 in two volumes. Substantial part of pp. 226-7 in the section "The Optimist and the Pessimist" vol.II 1846. Two pages 4to 19 x 20cm crumpled trimmed untidily with several tears many repaired as best they could. Text as follows changes and additions noted in square brackets: First page p.225 in book "important alliances her most valuable colonies her financial reputation; that word eradicated Britannia was now a lady of anything but unsullied reputation ; word eradicated that America had ceased to visit her and Europe was cutting her acquaintance: and tried to preserve a becoming elongation of countenance when every minute like the toll of a funeral bell Sir Josiah emitted some dolorous announcement. When lo ! just as I was beginning to feel as though a parish pall hung heavy upon my shoulders in bounced my friend Ramble his mottled cheeks distended by a smile and his white teeth glistening like those of a hungry word later addition pointer. "Just arrived in England my dear boy" cried he: "only with cap. In MS above elided phrase three hours landed at the Tower stairs "- in Published Work continues Sir Josiah who seemed to resent his intrusion in such towering spirits as a personal offence looked as if he longed to inquire whether poor Joe had travelled phrase added above elision on the broad grin all the way from France. "Here's comfort !" resumed Ramble trimmed so that next line can't be read."MS has "Ramble" instead of "Sir Josiah". First edition 1793 original flame calf deep red spine label very good copy 8 290 3 pp. In three parts the first lessons for children on their obligations when they are grown to their king and lord the second addressed to priests and the third part addressed to Pius VI regarding the revolution in France and what it portends. The author was a well known priest orator and educator on very good terms with Spanish royalty who rewarded him by making him a bishop with his base in Rio de la Plata Argentina but also with bishoprics in Cordoba and Catamarca Bolivia.
