Rollo Silver b.1909 - d.1989 was an American literary historian an American book collector and historian of American printing typography and publishing as created by white people in the European printing tradition and a librarian at the Peabody Institute in Boston from 1948 to 1950 after which he taught at Simmons. During his lifetime Silver was a part of many organizations that spoke to his interests. He joined the bibliophilic Grolier Club and the Society of Printers; he was also one of the founding members of the American Printing Historical Association. He was a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts as well as an honorary member of the Bibliographical Society of America. Silver also served as a trustee of Boston University and received an honorary doctor of letters degree from Brown University his alma mater in 1986. Silver began publishing essays on Walt Whitman in 1930 well before beginning his formal career as a scholar. He also collected many of Whitman's poems. Along with his wife Alice Gindin he compiled a set of manuscripts and other works related to Whitman and from 1928-1985 they designed and printed Christmas Greeting cards. Collected here is the black and white mock-up frontispiece and typescript galley proof as well as two typescript leaves on carbon paper with a twenty-five line statement by Walt Whitman beginning "Political democracy as it exists and practically works in America with all its threatening evils supplied a training-school for making first-class men." 1871. Most are silver prints plus a platinum a large image of breaking waves and a cyanotype; average size about 4 x 2.75 inches with some a bit smaller or larger. Backstrip torn; a few leaves detached. Taken by or related to an artist who appears to have specialized in architectural ornamentation. Includes snapshots depicting figures and buildings from different vantage points views of the studio including a close-up of drawings pinned to the wall a besmocked artist in front of an easel scenes of family a besmocked artist in front of an easel. Dates of the 14 total 1899-1905 most 1883; subjects include cattle rustling Indian wars shootings etc. Newspapers: 5 copies of the Silver City Press 1960; 1 copy of the Silver City Enterprise 1978. BEN LILLY: One 6" x 4" vintage silver print standing portrait with B. Lilly written in pencil on back c. 1920- One envelope containing five 8.5 x 10" glossy photographs of Lilly. The envelope has written on top edge: Ben Lilly . All but one photo are reproductions of Lilly photos seen elsewhere. One is of a man Lilly with several hounds but younger and without the beard. The photos are numbered I-VI so III is missing. Collected by Bob Stepp a prominent bookseller businessman in Silver City mentioned in one of the newspapers as filling a vacancy on the Pioneer Foundation board. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; "Benjamin Vernon Lilly or Ben Lilly 1856 1936 nicknamed Ol' Lilly was a notorious big game hunter houndsman and mountain man of the late American Old West. He remains famous for hunting down large numbers of grizzly cougars and black bears. A mix between a transcendentalist spirit and an ardent Christian he is described as an unfathomable Southern wild character. He was a stern practitioner of simple living and outdoor freedom roamed and hunted from Louisiana to Arizona and from Idaho to as far south as Chihuahua and Durango Mexico and was a subject of American folktales. Cameron would later become known for his church interiors and barren landscapes of Scotland done in drypoint. <br><br>CONDITION: Overall VG shows overall shelf wear and light age toning. Lacks loose leaf signed etching "Castle Moyle" which was originally issued with the first 200 copies of this limited edition. Completely unmarked leaves are bright and etchings are bold and dark.
