1929002875Washington DC: U. S. Government Printing Office 1929. First Edition. Very good. First edition Leaflet No. 50; 9 1/4 x 6; pp. 1 2-4; illustrated with two photographs and drawings; small chips with minor loss of paper to lower corners; a small spot to upper margin of title page; very mild foxing to fore-edge; in about very good- condition. Published by the Bureau of Biological Survey the pamphlet described the menace that "vagrant" cats were and presented with exhaustive directions the scematics for building a trap to humanely catch the said cats. The problem came with the follow-up explanation for how to get rid of the cats i. e. three alternate but equally barbaric methods involving carbon disulphide calcium cyanide and/or a body of water. The authors did warn the readers that the mentioned chemicals were "highly explosive and extremely toxic." In 1885 - 86 Congress established the Office of Economic Ornithology in the Department of Agriculture to study the migratory patterns and feeding habits of birds and to conserve their population to manage wildlife refugees to oversee predators etc. It would be renamed the Bureau of Biological Survey in 1905. Later still in 1940 several bureaus would be combined to form the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. U. S. Government Printing Office unknown books

Duotone illustrated boards with black cloth spine and gilt lettering. 176 pp. with 2 gatefolds; 47 duotone cataloge items pictured. Issued in conjunction with a series of 2008-2009 exhibitions. "The central goal of this exhibition is to display a selection of impressive and rare examples of this important yet unfamiliar category of prints that blossomed across Europe in the sixteenth century. It will introduce the composite print phenomenon in order to reassess and situate it within the history of Renaissance visual culture while also hoping to stimulate further study. For the first time since the ground-breaking exhibition Riesenholzschnitte Giant Woodcuts held in Germany in 1976 this exhibition assembles nearly fifty of these multipart works in one place. It however also expands the body of material from that earlier exhibition to include both engravings and etchings in addition to woodcuts." p. 8 With essays by Larry Silver Suzanne Boorsch Lilian Armstrong Alison Stewart and Stephen Goddard a substantial bibliography and the exhibition checklist of 47 items. Beautiful and detailed reproductions of the prints. Davis Museum and Cultural Center, Wellesley College hardcover books

197121131Buffalo NY: Six-Fourteen-Seventy Inc 1971. Trade paperback 72 pp. Fine. A detailed analysis of clashes between police and crowds attending an arts festival in the Allentown neighborhood of Buffalo NY on June 14 1970. Sources differ on who started the incident but it is clear that spectators to the arrest of a disorderly person threw rocks and bottles at the police and the police responded with extensive use of tear gas sending many people -- including small children -- to the hospital and leaving the community outraged at what was perceived as an excessive response. The authors combed through approximately 200 affidvits from people who were present as well as extensive media coverage of the incident and concluded that both police and politicians refused to concede that mistakes had been made and that the news media unquestioningly accepted the official narrative.
