A very scarce work. The first edition of this work. This work is an argument in favour of the Reform Bill of 1832 which introduced changes to the electoral systems in England and Wales. In this work the author criticises the people who were attempting to set the working classes against it. Written by William Carpenter a theological and political writer. He was imprisoned in 1831 for evading the stamp duty on newspapers. This pamphlet was written whilst he was in the King's Bench prison. Disbound. First and last leaf are almost detached. Internally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some spots. Fair Strange unknown

With his publication of this work Carpenter attempted to defy the stamp duty on newspapers but in May 1831 he was tried and convicted of evading the law and was imprisoned. With a portrait of Carpenter bound in and many small illustrations. William Carpenter born in 1797 at St James Westminster London England died on April 21 1874 at Islington London was a 19th Century theological and political writer journalist and editor. Carpenter was the son of a London tradesman. He received no formal schooling but by self-study he taught himself several ancient and modern languages. At an early age he began working for a bookseller in Finsbury first as an errand boy and then as an apprentice. While in prison he edited a political magazine which was republished as Carpenter's Monthly Political Magazine in 1832. He became intensely involved in the cause of political reform publishing numerous tracts and books on the subject through the late 1840s. He was a strong proponent of the Chartist movement and a friend of William Cobbett. He was also an active Freemason and contributor to the London Freemason magazine. He continued to publish scriptural works throughout his life which were also popular in America. His The Israelites Found in the Anglo-Saxons 1874 was an early work on British Israelism. In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally worn with slight straining to front hinges. Internally generally firmly bound but with one or two pages starting. A letter offering to distribute up to 300 of the circulars. William Boyd Carpenter 1841-1918 was a Church of England cleric who became Bishop of Ripon and Royal Chaplain to Queen Victoria. Levi Leone 1821-1888. English jurist and statistician. His chief work History of British Commerce and of the Economic Progress of the British Nation 1763-1870 is considered to be a partisan account of British economic development. Size is 150mm x 100mm. This example is in a nineteenth century half leather binding with gilt decoration over brown cloth with marbled edges. The binding is sound but the leather is worn to the corners and the spine label lost. Internally the text and illustrations are complete. The two plates of cells and the nerve centres of different classes of animal are damp stained but the other pages are clean. With an extended chapter on the development and metamorphoses of cells. Both hinges are cracked with the boards becoming slightly wobbly. There is also a few gutter cracks but most pages remain firmly attached. Top quarter of p97 & 111 has torn along the signature fold. Boards are quite worn with obvious bumps around the edges. There is some tape across the spine head covering a small area of loss to the cloth. Small splits approx. 5mcm to spine ends with a split along bottom edge of front board. Spine has tanned into a darker green. Tiny filing spindle hole; partial splitting at center mailing fold with no loss scrawled pencil docket and light soiling; about very good. Carpenter writes "To Mr. Herbert S. Stone" of the Chicago publishing firm of Stone & Kimball reporting that "All the drawings for the set of books you are getting out for Mr. Garland have been turned in & have proofs of all with the exception of the last two or three . They seem to have Mr. Garland's approval . I have tried to do good work on them and I think they will come out very strong and black. I have made many more than I had expected to but I am of course anxious to make a good showing from purely a selfish reason." Carpenter continues: "I should be very glad indeed to have you give me a chance when opportunity presents itself to do some artistic and decorative work quaint initials and the like or illustrating of any kind. While I have been very glad to have the opportunity of doing some realistic illustrating I think I would make a creditable showing in other directions. I mentioned to Mr. Garland the other day the payment of the $100 . I should very much appreciate the remittance if convenient as this season's experience has not left me in good financial shape." Horace Thompson Carpenter 1857-1947 was an American illustrator artist and art writer and served as Manager of THE LITERARY NORTHWEST AN ILLUSTRATED MONTHLY MAGAZINE which was published briefly in St. Paul by the D.D. Merrill Company from March 1892 until July 1893 -- no doubt its demise was among the causes of Carpenter's financial concerns. He studied under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. "Hamlin Garland's books were the rock on which the firm of Stone & Kimball was securely founded . . . The firm published Garland's PRAIRIE SONGS the essays CRUMBLING IDOLS and the novel ROSE OF DUTCHER'S COOLLY. Another volume of stories PRAIRIE FOLKS was published by Stone & Kimball in 1895 from the types of an earlier edition. The author was extravagantly pleased with the appearance of these books; especially with the designs of H.T. Carpenter for MAIN TRAVELLED ROADS reprinted by Stone & Kimball and PRAIRIE SONGS and with the symbolic design of three cornstalks the publishers gave their bindings. 1893134814Paris: c.1893. A finely executed illustrated manuscript documenting a pleasure cruise around Britain on the steam-yacht Medjé in the summer of 1892. The voyage won the Union des yachts français medal for the most interesting cruise of 1891-93 a sharp silver print of which with the presentation letter from the comte de Montaigu is mounted at the front. Portions of the narrative appeared in Le Yacht in 1894. The account offers a lively Belle Époque tour of the British Isles - effectively a circumnavigation shortened by the Caledonian Canal - with etched illustrations after pen-and-ink drawings by the Rochellois maritime artist Georges Charpentier 1846-1925. The yacht belonged to Xavier Eugène Schelcher 1867-1948 a wealthy Parisian stockbroker and new member of the Union des yachts français. Departing Le Havre in July 1892 the Medjé ran down the English coast to Plymouth passing through the Royal Naval Manoeuvres and prompting newspaper speculation that she carried French naval observers. Welcomed in Plymouth with a tour of the naval installations and an abundant lunch the party continued west shooting seabirds and bathing off Penzance before crossing to Ireland. At Kingstown and Dublin they visited the Royal Irish Yacht Club and commented - sometimes archly - on the city's poverty accompanied by Charpentier's vivid sketches. Excursions into Wicklow and a crossing to Holyhead allowed visits to Liverpool and Birkenhead where the builders of the Medjé's engines Cochran & Co. were proudly noted. Further stops included the Isle of Man Belfast Robinson & Cleaver's celebrated linen shop and the Giant's Causeway. They then headed for Glasgow detouring to Iona and Staffa and entered the Caledonian Canal Charpentier illustrating Neptune's Staircase and other scenes. Scotland's landscapes and Edinburgh's beauty impressed them deeply; excursions to the Trossachs prompted reflections on Walter Scott's romances. The rapid return down the east coast - Berwick Newcastle Scarborough Harwich Ramsgate - elicited little enthusiasm Newcastle offering "only a dungeon". Relief greeted the sight of Cape Gris-Nez and home. The Medjé was a 25-metre 43-ton twin-screw steam yacht built in 1889 at the Maudslay Son & Field yard powered by Cochran & Co. engines delivering 96 h.p. Schelcher was an active yachtsman winning two gold medals at the 1900 Paris Olympics; his son Rémi later competed at the 1936 Berlin Games. Schelcher is also known to have commissioned a comparable illustrated album of his 1897 cruise to the Norwegian fjords. Overall this is an attractively produced richly illustrated and often satirical record of British touring at the height of luxury yachting. Quarto 318 x 247 mm. 57 leaves of neat manuscript text titles and headings in a calligraphic Ronde hand occasional rubrication; 52 superb etched plates after pen and ink drawings by Charpentier the first additionally signed "A. Barret Sc." deck plan and full-page track-chart map; text and plates are both printed on fine polished vélin the plates on a slightly lighter weight. Contemporary strong orange half morocco by Victor Champs French curl on Turkish pattern marbled boards title gilt to the spine neatly nipped bands dotted roll gilt fouled anchor devices to the compartments double gilt ruled frame with olive sprig cornerpieces author's initials to the tail of the spine top edge gilt the others uncut marbled endpapers to match the boards silk page-marker. Twenty four volumes twenty three in matching brick red cloth with printed paper spine labels one index volume in wrappers. Most volumes have two signatures in ink one dated 1972 either on the end papers or title pages; spines and labels with some smudging/soil. The cloth volumes are 9 1/4 x 7 1/2 inches they vary in page numbers; the entire run takes up 28 inches of shelf space. The page edges are deckled; some paper spine labels are chipped with loss. About good or better condition with the following exceptions: vol. II. has a library donation bookplate but no other library matter in the entire set; vol. iv is shaken with nothing detached; vol. xvi has a torn front end paper lacking about half; edge-worn title page; end papers and title page soiled. Vol. xx. has a torn rear end paper hinge. The Index volume is as issued in wrappers and is the index for the first 21 volumes. This lot also includes Fourth Report of the Record Commissioners relative to the Early Town Records City Document no. 23 1895 in a matching cloth binding and Fifth Report of the Record Commissioners relative to the Early Town Records City Document no. 24 1897. This last has a large folding map laid in a replica of the 1823 map by Daniel Anthony. It has some old repairs to the folds and could stand to be further repaired as there are some tears at the folds. The "1823" on the map has been filled in with pen or marker and there are staple holes indicating that this once hung on a bulletin board or something similar. A complete set with some extras.
