Last leaf blank. 8vo. 23.5 cm x 14 cm.

This an interesting factual account regarding the early days of the prison an era when it wasn't quite impregnable edifice that now stands; in 1854 75 of 520 incarcerated individuals had escaped without recapture. This situation caused Governor John Bigler to write: "Gentlemen: Having learned from various reliable sources that quite a number of escapes have recently occurred from the State Prison which to some extent is in your charge I deem it my duty respectfully to invite your attention to the section of the law regulating your duties. These escapes permit me here to remark give great force to allegations daily and publicly made that the prison building is insecure and that its management is not such as to fully accomplish the object of its erection in prevention and punishment of crime." However since the place is still going strong one can be reasonably confident the governor's concerns were addressed. Rare; Not in Cowan Greenwood nor Rocq. Not in the LoC on-line catalogue. 187941099London 1879.
Carpenter William B. 1813-85. Autograph letter signed to Mr. John Paget 1811-98. London 56 Regents Part Rd. N.W. June 2 1879. 4pp. 178 x 114 mm. A few tiny pin-holes but fine otherwise.

From English physiologist and naturalist William B. Carpenter who "helped shape the modern life sciences in Britain Oxford DNB through both his writings and his work as a teacher and administrator at what is now the University of London. Carpenter performed valuable researches in marine zoology and was directly influential in persuading the British Admiralty to sponsor the Challenger expedition the first major scientific study of the deep oceans. Carpenter is also recognized as one of the founders of the modern theory of the adaptive unconscious-he observed that the human perceptual system and the mechanism of human thought operates almost completely outside of conscious awareness.

Carpenter's letter which discusses a false confession to murder made by a mentally unbalanced young man reads in part as follows:

Dear Mr. Paget In turning out my papers at the University today I have come upon a document which I forward to you containing the Father's statement of his Son's relation to the "Brompton Murder" case with full particulars of the latter's confession and its inconsistency with the facts.

I believe that I did not send in this to the Home Secy.; but that what I specially urged upon him was the evidence with which Knowles had supplied me of the "cracky" nature of the youth's mind and of the obviously hereditary tendency to brood as shown in the father and aunt-the latter an old servant of Knowles. And I remember also that there was evidence of the youth having had money in the Savings Bank and of his having drawn out a pound just before the Crystal Palace Police Fête.

This altogether made so strong an impression on Mr. Bruce that he at once commuted the sentence; and the family were so sensible that the lad was not fit to take care of himself that they expressed no disappointment at his not having received a free pardon. . . .

Carpenter's correspondent was the police magistrate and author John Paget whose Paradoxes and Puzzles published in 1874 included accounts of a number of sensational crimes. We have not been able to identify the murder case to which Carpenter refers in his letter.
. unknown books

Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a few small closed tears. Books signed by Carpenter are rare. Don Carpenter's Hard Rain Falling is a tough-as-nails account of being down and out but never down for good--a Dostoyevskian tale of crime punishment and the pursuit of an ever-elusive redemption. "Hard Rain Falling is a unique read; violent tender inexorable and melancholic; a beat-era book of disaffected young men devoid of On the Road euphoria but more poignant and gripping for its fatalistic grounding. The small lives contained herein are indelible" Richard Price. Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc hardcover books

The accompanying essay describes that similar legal documents were among the first printed documents in Mexico. This was because certain legal phraseology allowed for a document to print the standard words needed and then add the necessary text in manuscript as with this specimen. Dr. Emilio Valtón was the first bibliographer to collect this extremely early and otherwise ignored form of printing in Spain. "Carta de pago" power of attorney. Gothic type. 1866WRCAM52261Philadelphia 1866. 15316pp. Contemporary half calf and marbled boards. Binding worn and rubbed. Very good. An interesting carpenter's account book from 19th-century Philadelphia containing a voluminous amount of entries listing client names types of carpentry work done and the costs thereof. Internal evidence his name on pages 52 and 114 suggests that this belonged to Philadelphia carpenters John and W.H. Martin. The accounts start on July 22 1835 exactly one month after the 1835 Philadelphia general strike ended. Workers' rights and formative unions owe much to this strike in Philadelphia the first general strike by wage workers in North America. The strike helped alleviate long hours and low pay by involving some 20000 workers who demanded a ten-hour work day and increased wages. The strike was very successful ending in an almost complete victory for the workers.

About half of the ledger deals with work done in the first five years in which it was kept 1835-1840. There are no entries from June 1847 to June 1849 and only sporadic entries from 1857 to the final entries in 1866; most of the rest of the accounts are from 1840 to 1855 except the two-year hiatus.

The account book lists a wide assortment of different types of work accomplished by carpenters including framing putting up awnings "repairing a privey seat" hanging doors and windows putting up lightning rods making shutters mending floors and much more. In addition Martin seemed to occasionally make furniture specifically benches and tables for which there are some entries here. It also contains important information on the prices paid by tradesmen for supplies in Philadelphia at the time mostly lumber and nails in this case.

Although there is no explicit ownership signature both internal evidence and other material purchased from the same estate suggest John Martin as the principal craftsperson and W.H. Martin as an employee or other principal of the business. The ledger offers much insight into American trade in one of its most important cities at a time of immense growth.

A fascinating account book with much detail on the development of Philadelphia private homes in the middle of the 19th century. hardcover books

1962102763New York: Simon and Schuster 1962. First edition of this first-hand account of the genesis of America's manned space program. Octavo original cloth pictorial endpapers illustrated. Signed on the half-title page by John Glenn Scott Carpenter Wally Schirra Gordon Cooper and comedian Bill Dana aka Jose Jimenez. Jimenez was a fictional character created and performed by comedian Bill Dana on The Steve Allen Show in 1959 and who became increasingly popular during the 1960s and is cited in this volume on several occasions. This character introduced himself with the catch phrase: "My name. Jose Jimenez". The character of Jose Jimenez caught on with the seven real Mercury astronauts and Dana became good friends with them: "Okay Jose you're on your way!" Deke Slayton quipped as Alan Shepard's famous first flight launched. Jose became the program's unofficial mascot and Dana was even made an honorary Mercury astronaut. Coincidentally there was a real test pilot named Bill Dana who flew as high as 59 miles up and qualified for NASA's Astronaut Badge. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Paul Bacon. A unique signed example. The first seven American astronauts were an admirable group of individuals chosen to sit at the apex of a pyramid of human effort. In volunteering to entrust their lives to Mercury's spirit and Atlas' strength to blaze a trail for man into the empyrean they chose to lead by following the opportunity that chance circumstance technology and history had prepared for them" Swenson Grimwood & Alexander 164-65. Printed by Eugene Verneau. With the Blind stamp of L'estampe Originale. Stein and Karshan 14. Slightly mat burned in the margins but colors are excellent as original. One of the most important artists together with Pierre Roche to use gypsography in the 1890s. The process involves using plaster moulds and hand-colored damp paper to create the image after which ink is applied directly to the mould as with a wood-engraving. Later he replaced the plaster moulds with metal to achieve more detail in the relief. He used the method in book form for the first time here. The effect is one of medals set within the typographic layout unknown books
