1879163401879. Prison and Incarceration Biography Mary Carpenter. The Life and Work of Mary Carpenter. Book with Autograph Letter Signed of Mary Carpenter Pasted in 1879 Carpenter J. Estlin M.A.--The Life and Work of Mary Carpenter First Edition 1879. Bound in green leather with marbled boards. 495 pages. Portrait of Carpenter facing title page. Mary Carpenter was one of the foremost public speakers of her time and is best remembered for the huge contribution she made to educational and penal reform. She opened "ragged schools" to give an education to the children of the poor and introduced reformatories which took a caring and constructive stance for young offenders. Mary Carpenter also campaigned for better education for women and reforms to prisons. Following a meeting with Frederick Douglas Mary Carpenter became fervently opposed of the slave trade particularly the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850. She traveled extensively in America Europe and India where she also sought reforms similar to those she pursued in Britain. She was a pioneer in the field of equality for women and stood almost alone as a female orator who was widely listened to and respected. Not all criticism was favorable however; both her books and her work were condemned by Pope Pius IX. Light foxing to free endpapers and title page. Minimal shelfwear. Overall good condition. unknown

Document tape at fore-edge of one leaf. A very good copy of a scarce women's suffrage item. The present report written by Republican Senator Matthew Hale Carpenter 1824 – 1881 responds to the memorial presented by numerous prominent suffragists including Susan B. Anthony Elizabeth Cady Stanton Isabella Beecher Hooker Elizabeth S. Bladen Olympia Brown and Josephine J. Griffing. The suffragists' memorial argued that the 1870 ratification of the 15th Amendment which granted voting rights to citizens of the United States regardless of "race color or previous condition of servitude" should also grant women the right to vote. Carpenter and the Senate denied that the 15th Amendment applies to women's suffrage and rejected the memorial.

A coherent sammelband of nine pamphlets by or relating to Unitarian minister Lant Carpenter 1780-1840 including notably his biographical memoir of Rajah Rammohun Roy 1772-1833. In 1816 Carpenter took up the post of minister at Lewin's Mead Chapel Bristol. There he commenced a vigorous philanthropic initiative on the lines of a domestic mission and the establishment of a school. One of the more unusual events of his ministry was the arrival in Bristol of the Indian religious reformer Rammohun Roy in whose monotheistic movement Carpenter was strongly interested; Roy died of chronic respiratory ailment during his visit and Carpenter preached his funeral sermon. Roy who has been called the father of modern India was a tireless social reformer. In 1823 when the British imposed censorship upon the Calcutta Kolkata press Roy as founder and editor of two of India’s earliest weekly newspapers organised a protest arguing in favour of freedom of speech and religion as natural rights. He denounced the caste system advocated a monotheistic Hinduism and proposed the adoption of a modern Western curriculum of study. . First edition. Rowland Hunter et al. unknown
