1676020566Paris: Claude Barbin and Simon Benard 1676 & 1677. First Edition. Hardcover. Library stamp on title and first page of dedication no other markings; binding a bit worn spine chipped with partial loss of spine label. Good example of a scarce book. Small octavo 3-3/4" x 6-1/4" in calf; xxxviii 341 17; xvi 71pages. In the 1670s there was a heated debate among Paris intellectuals concerning whether inscriptions for a proposed triumphal arch in honor of Louis XIV should be in Latin or French. In the first work the author one of the first members of the Academy of Inscriptions argues in favor of the use of French for the inscription. Lucas in his work argues for Latin to be used. In the end the arguments were for naught. While there are four triumphal arches still standing in Paris this particular arch was never constructed.

Claude Barbin and Simon Benard hardcover

1984MD-259New York: Churchill Livingstone 1984. Highly acclaimed comprehensive text presents a coherent authoritative and extensively illustrated reference work on human skeletal muscle pathology. This book has been described as the `bible' of muscle disease from both a scientific and a clinical point of view. It is a detailed yet practical text of human muscle pathology that not only describes but extensively and beautifully illustrates human myopathology. The book provides a unified and consistent clinicopathological viewpoint in each section. The color illustrations of muscle histochemical reactions prove once again that a muscle biopsy can be a thing of beauty. These outstanding high quality black & white and color plates are the best available. 754 pp. Illustrated. Prior owner's name on front endpaper and outer edge. Minimal shelfwear. "Borrowing its title from the Wallace Stevens poem in which 'little existed for him but the few things / for which a fresh name always occurred' Tim Carpenter's Local Objects is a solid yet remarkably unassuming body of work: a calm steady rhythm of 74 medium format photographs made in the semi-rural American Midwest. While each picture meticulously frames the seemingly random non-activity of a typical 'street view' image Carpenter's contemplative sequencing allows a surprising harmony of natural and geometric motifs to modulate quietly throughout the book — an interplay of minor chords that draw the viewer into this specific physical place mostly central Illinois where he grew up and the subjective literary space of the work. Detached from the urgency of current affairs stripped of all excess Carpenter's photographs reflect a poetic attempt to see 'the thing in itself' to make meaning with the barest tools possible." — Publisher's note. Tim Carpenter a photographer and writer of growing acclaim is based in Brooklyn and central Illinois. He received his MFA in Photography from Hartford Art School in 2012 and has studied with Alec Soth Ron Jude Mark Steinmetz and Doug Dubois. He is a co-founder of the independent photobook imprint TIS Books.
