C. mid-1860's Considered by many of his contemporaries as 'first among equals' A slip of paper bearing the inked inscription of the sitter has been pasted across the lower margin of the mount. Mary Carpenter was an English educational and social reformer who founded the ragged schools and reformatories bringing previously unavailable educational opportunities to poor children and young offenders. Walking through a Bristol slum in the 1830s and witnessing the poverty of its children she realized young offenders could never improve their circumstances without their well being fostered. Her life's work from that day became creating stable nurturing institutions for social reform. Carpenter was also active in the anti-slavery movement and became known as one of the foremost public speakers of her time traveling to India where she worked to improve female education establish reformatory schools and improve prison conditions. unknown

Twenty four volumes twenty three in matching brick red cloth with printed paper spine labels one index volume in wrappers. Most volumes have two signatures in ink one dated 1972 either on the end papers or title pages; spines and labels with some smudging/soil. The cloth volumes are 9 1/4 x 7 1/2 inches they vary in page numbers; the entire run takes up 28 inches of shelf space. The page edges are deckled; some paper spine labels are chipped with loss. About good or better condition with the following exceptions: vol. II. has a library donation bookplate but no other library matter in the entire set; vol. iv is shaken with nothing detached; vol. xvi has a torn front end paper lacking about half; edge-worn title page; end papers and title page soiled. Vol. xx. has a torn rear end paper hinge. The Index volume is as issued in wrappers and is the index for the first 21 volumes. This lot also includes Fourth Report of the Record Commissioners relative to the Early Town Records City Document no. 23 1895 in a matching cloth binding and Fifth Report of the Record Commissioners relative to the Early Town Records City Document no. 24 1897. This last has a large folding map laid in a replica of the 1823 map by Daniel Anthony. It has some old repairs to the folds and could stand to be further repaired as there are some tears at the folds. The "1823" on the map has been filled in with pen or marker and there are staple holes indicating that this once hung on a bulletin board or something similar. A complete set with some extras. No images are identified; almost all photographs are of people taken in a studio; only a few are pictures of people taken outdoors. Collection includes: 68 cabinet cards each with a mounted 4x6 photograph; 5 - 6x10 cards with large mounted photograph ; 12 tintypes with photos about 2x3 inches most of these are in original paper envelopes and 7 photos of smaller size. Almost all the photographs in the collection are from the studio of Robert J Carpenter which opened in Louisville in 1881; most are with the address "Carpenter and Co" on Market street which would date them to approx 1892-1895. Photos of a few other photographers are in the group - Klauber who was active in Louisville from about 1868-1907 and Ackerman & Betz on Jefferson St who was active 1891-1894. All photos are in Good to Fine condition almost all being Good Plus to VG. Would make a fine photography exhibit. . unknown

Centered on the Salinas Valley this colorful map presents a huge amount of information in the Monterey County region. The map contains a legend of tones to delineate soil types each shown with its own color and pattern. Conventional Signs delineate citys villages roads buildings wharves jetties lighthouses forts trails fords dams mines quarries railroads tunnels schools churches cemetaries and much more. The soils were surveyed by E.J. Carpenter and Stanley W. Cosby. <br /> <br /> The Salinas Valley is one of the major valleys and most productive agricultural regions in California. It is located west of the San Joaquin Valley and south of San Francisco Bay and the Santa Clara Valley. Agriculture dominates the economy of the valley. Promoters call the Salinas Valley "the Salad Bowl of the World" for the production of lettuce broccoli peppers and numerous other crops. The climate and long growing season are also ideal for the flower industry and grape vineyards planted by world-famous vintners. It is also known for being the setting of the novels East of Eden Tortilla Flat Of Mice and Men The Chrysanthemums and Johnny Bear by John Steinbeck.
