ill., br. Nel panorama del cinema fantastico, John Carpenter è una vera e propria leggenda. I suoi film hanno segnato in maniera indelebile l'immaginario di generazioni di spettatori. Le sue opere solo superficialmente possono essere associate alla fantascienza o all'horror: in realtà sfruttano i meccanismi del genere per raccontarci i problemi e le contraddizioni della nostra società. Carpenter è per carattere un regista fuori dal tempo, o in anticipo sui tempi: molti dei suoi film più rappresentativi al momento dell'uscita nelle sale non furono capiti dal pubblico, o furono addirittura rifiutati, per essere rivalutati solo in un secondo momento e diventare veri e propri classici. Lo stesso regista si scontrò a più riprese con le regole degli Studios, finendo per essere riconosciuto come autore prima in Europa che in patria. Anche se da tempo si è ritirato dalle scene, John Carpenter resta ancora un punto di riferimento: lo spirito inquieto che anima il suo cinema non smette di parlarci e i suoi film sono ormai dei cult, con i quali spettatori e giovani registi sono chiamati a fare i conti.
