Images: https://www.photoeye.com/bookstore/citation/ZJ012 . "In Christmas Day Bucks Pond Road his second book with The Ice Plant Brooklyn-based photographer Tim Carpenter born 1968 revisits the Central Illinois topography of his first monograph Local Objects with a sequence of 56 black-and-white medium-format photographs all made on a single winter morning. In Local Objects he meandered this semi-rural Midwestern landscape through changing seasons in an abstract sequence but here Carpenter follows a straightforward path literally taking the viewer on a two-hour walk from point A to point B. Nothing much happens along this brief narrative arc—there are fallow fields standing water dormant trees the occasional tire track on worn pavement—yet Carpenter explores the stillness of this outdoor space with a palpable almost erotic anticipation revealing intimate subtleties as the journey unfolds. Made with an intensity of attention and a lightness of touch the photographs in Christmas Day Bucks Pond Road are less about the confines of this specific time and place than about a poetic strategy for narrowing the distance between human desire and the factual content of the everyday world." -Publisher's notes. ISBN 9780989785990 same ISBN for trade & special editions. More info: https://theiceplant.cc/product/local-objects-special-edition/ . "Borrowing its title from the Wallace Stevens poem in which 'little existed for him but the few things / for which a fresh name always occurred' Tim Carpenter's Local Objects is a solid yet remarkably unassuming body of work: a calm steady rhythm of 74 medium format photographs made in the semi-rural American Midwest. While each picture meticulously frames the seemingly random non-activity of a typical 'street view' image Carpenter's contemplative sequencing allows a surprising harmony of natural and geometric motifs to modulate quietly throughout the book — an interplay of minor chords that draw the viewer into this specific physical place mostly central Illinois where he grew up and the subjective literary space of the work. Detached from the urgency of current affairs stripped of all excess Carpenter's photographs reflect a poetic attempt to see 'the thing in itself' to make meaning with the barest tools possible." — Publisher's note. Tim Carpenter a photographer and writer of growing acclaim is based in Brooklyn and central Illinois. He received his MFA in Photography from Hartford Art School in 2012 and has studied with Alec Soth Ron Jude Mark Steinmetz and Doug Dubois. He is a co-founder of the independent photobook imprint TIS Books.
