Seven photographic plates tissue guards intact with the exception of the frontispiece and thirty-eight color diagrams with a price list at the rear dated 1891. <br/><br/>Englishman William Cook played professional billiards in the late 19th century winning several world championships until about 1885 when the award went to Cook's longtime rival John Roberts Jr. because Cook would not respond to Roberts' challenge. Cook's memoir is one of the most detailed treatments on the subject of billiards of its time. <br/><br/>Moderate foxing throughout light soil to the rear board light creases to some of the tissue guards offsetting to the endpapers light fraying and rubbing to the extremities with splitting to the internal hinges. Light toning to text somewhat heavier in places "4" in early hand to head of title page. $850. Only edition. Cook a linen draper and political radical was found guilty of displaying in his shop window a handbill promoting a nailers' strike that accused government ministers of contributing to the starvation of the people. However his punishment was light being bound over for the sum 200 to receive sentence "when called upon." This pamphlet was published by Cook to raise money for his legal expenses. A note at the foot of p. 72 is an appeal for additional financial assistance: "S. Cook will be happy to receive and Subscriptions towards his late expenses and towards such subsequent proceedings as may be deemed requisite." This copy inscribed lightly in pencil on the front free endpaper: "Miss Alden / from the author." Richmond 1808-1868 was a Providence native. This is the first and only published canto of his epic poem on King Philip written while the author was an unwilling inmate at the McLean Asylum for the Insane at Somerville Mass and which seems to have been published to vindicate his sanity and to attack the medicos who pronounced him insane. The publisher produced only a very few books all issued in 1879. ~ Evident FIRST EDITION. A promotional cookbook featuring recipes that are brief if not altogether lacking in detail. The book is in service to Houghton & Dutton a dry goods specialist from Boston and the recipes are interspersed with descriptions of the shop's various departments crockery glassware millinery etc. In addition to the text descriptions there are advertisements throughout with varied typography but all hawking Houghton & Dutton. Susan G. Knight was also the author of a number of other works including one cookbook Tit-Bits How to prepare a nice dish at moderate expense Boston & New York 1865. A comparison of the two text would perhaps be of use. Some age-toning to text-block and wear to corners of some leaves. In printed yellow wrappers worn and soiled but whole. Unrecorded. A promotional cookbook for the patent medicines of Healy & Bigelow's Kickapoo Indian Medicine Company featuring over one hundred seventy simple recipes for beverages biscuits candy cakes fish meat pastry poultry puddings soup stews and vegetables interspersed with information about Kickapoo Indian oil salve and other products. Also included are narratives on Indian culture wildly racist but of the era. John H. Healy and Charles Bigelow began their company in the late 1870s promoting their "traditional" Indian medicines with traveling medicine shows that capitalized on the public's nostalgia for the the Wild West. They also had a Canadian subsidiary called The Pratt Food Company of Canada Ltd. The business was well established and operated well into the mid-20th century. The book contained exhaustive information on raising feeding breeding for exhibition and diseases of poultry as well as detailed descriptions of various breeds. Pages 26-55 remain intact with indices of business houses of Boston New York Philadelphia and Pittsburgh with maps showing locations. Interspersed are advertisements. Page 56-finis are forty-nine handwritten recipes ranging from fly-paper and taffy to sausages and Dutch apple pie. Though various inks are used appears to be the same author. Boards are discolored and binding is quite shaken. Fair condition. hardcover books

Identification number in a later hand on title page and lower paste down. A collection of poems written in a neat hand mostly from known poets but with a number of original poems provided by the compiler Mallory and a lady named Marie. There is a momentary change of hand for one poem but all other poems appear to be in Mallory's hand. Dated poems indicate Mallory worked on his collection from 1859-1862. A note at the end indicates a continuing volume though we're unsure if it exists. <br/><br/> hardcover books

Founded by Joachim Conrad Loddiges in Hackey north of London the renowned Loddiges plant nursery rose to great prominence during the early nineteenth century under George Loddiges who published in serial numbers the present Botanical Cabinet produced in connection with George Cooke one of the more highly sought after engravers of the era. The 2000 hand-colored plates catalogued the broad array of exotic plants trees shrubs ferns palms and orchids introduced into the famed nursery's hothouses and gardens from around the world. 18803247Westfield Mass: H. Holcombe E.G. Cook 1880. Very good. Single sheet three horizontal folds trifle soiling along one fold on verso. The verso is docketed no doubt by the purchaser: "Holcombe Cook / Bill $21.04 / July 17 '80." Curious relic of an era in which most transportation and industry was powered by the horse. We forget that manufacturing was an important industry and Westfield Mass. was a major producer of same.<br/><br/>Offered here is an amusing easily misunderstood billhead dated July 17 1880 from Holcomb & Cook "Manufacturers of Whips and Thongs" the latter of course being the tassles at the end of a whip. The firm was founded in Westfield Hampden County Mass. by Solomon Shepard' upon his death in 1875 the ferrier became simply Holcomb & Cook. <br/><br/>The purchaser of this $21 order ! was the historic General Store of Glover Warner & Clark which for decades was effectively at the very center of Sandy Hook Connecticut. The store was established in 1861 when William B. Glover took James H. Warner into partnership with him; it subsequently became the Red Brick General Store. Well into the twentieth century it was esteemed for the diversity of their merchandise and the quality of their meats initially supplied by Homer Clark and subsequently his son George Sr. Unable to hold out against the national chains the Red Brick Store closed in 1978. The "Official catalog musical program list of exhibitors" for this fourth congress of members of the Boston Retail Grocers Association. The association was founded in 1881 and held its first food fair that year. Photographic portraits of the senior members of the Association are included as is a description of Miss Nellie Dot Ranche of Chicago who was brought in for the occasion to run the Domestic Science Programs. It's interesting that the committee reached out to the Midwest at this moment when Cooking Schools in Boston were on the rise and very visible. The copious advertising displays a range of categories of goods one would find in a grocery of the turn of the 19th century: coffee cocoa mustard Havana cigars root beer Ceylon tea French Coca Wine virgin olive oil nut meats and salt as well as household goods including: thread collars washing liquids bluing ink. Also represented are goods and services aimed at the grocers and retailers: boxes and bags promotional printing specialized contracting refrigeration etc. Tiny bit of spotting to green and gold-printed gray wrappers otherwise fine. Sizes range from 4-1/8" x 6-7/8" to 7-3/8" x 7-1/2" <br/><br/>"Paul Whitin helped found the Northbridge Cotton Manufacturing Company in Northbridge Massachusetts in 1809 and in 1816 joined his brothers-in-law in founding the Whitin & Fletchers mill in South Northbridge now Whitinsville of which he became sole owner in 1826. Around this time his two elder sons Paul Jr. and John joined him forming P. Whitin & Sons. Operating under that name Paul and John purchased the Northbridge Cotton Manufacturing Company mill after the death of their father in 1831 and they later added their younger brothers Charles and James to the company. The company prospered and supplemented its cotton production with the manufacture of pickers looms and other machinery. About half of the houses in Whitinsville were owned by the company and rented to its employees most of whom worked in the shop and foundry; a few employees were clerks in the company store." A significant association copy probably in a presentation binding inscribed by the compiler to the novelist's son on a preliminary leaf: "To Charles Dickens Esq. with the regards of the Compiler James Cook Aug. 27 1879." Cook's BIBLIOGRAPHY "made with a set of the various Works as they were originally published in parts or in volumes" precedes that of R.H. Shepherd Manchester 1881 and several items directed at collectors such as Johnson's HINTS TO COLLECTORS 1885. Cook provides "such particulars as are necessary to give the Bibliophilist or Collector a thorough knowledge of the peculiarities of the several editions".
