The Foreword reads: "The Virginia League of Women Voters offers this book of Virginia Cookery in the hope that those who use it will find it helpful and will have the added satisfaction of knowing that by purchasing a copy they will have contributed to the fund of the League for education in good citizenship." The Virginia League of Women Voters was organized to help women attain and exercise their right to vote after the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote was passed in Congress in 1919. Virginia however was one of the nine southern states that opposed the amendment and refused to ratify it. Virginia women at last won the hard-fought right to vote in August 1920 when the Nineteenth Amendment became law and exercised that right soon after in the November elections. Recipes are attributed to members of the community with local advertisements giving the reader a genuine feel for the community. Light brown film adhered to large portions of front and back cover. 1785267711785. Very Good. Engraving of A View of Karakakooa in Owyhee. Remargined paper size 15 1/4 x 10 3/4 inches 38.5 x 27.3 cm. Professionally remargined and laid down on tissue by Green Dragon bindery. We think the first edition of this engraving was created by John Webber engraved by W. Byrne and published in the atlas plate 68 to accompany "A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean London: W. and A. Strahan for G. Nicol 1784."<br/><br/>This example is smaller lightly tinted and rather than being engraved by Byrne is marked "Taylor sculp" lower right. In pencil it is marked on rear "opposite p. 577 Cooks' Voyages 1785 edition". We have been unable to trace to our satisfaction exactly where this engraving was published. It is nonetheless a famous scene and desirable to those who collect voyages Hawaii and the location where Captain Cook eventually died. unknown books

Seven photographic plates tissue guards intact with the exception of the frontispiece and thirty-eight color diagrams with a price list at the rear dated 1891. <br/><br/>Englishman William Cook played professional billiards in the late 19th century winning several world championships until about 1885 when the award went to Cook's longtime rival John Roberts Jr. because Cook would not respond to Roberts' challenge. Cook's memoir is one of the most detailed treatments on the subject of billiards of its time. <br/><br/>Moderate foxing throughout light soil to the rear board light creases to some of the tissue guards offsetting to the endpapers light fraying and rubbing to the extremities with splitting to the internal hinges. Invented in the late 19th century America's introduction to Vegex née Marmite was in 1913. The introductory text heralds the "health- and strength-building" properties of this distinctive and powerfully flavored food spread and its crucial role for British troops in World War I. Approximately seventy-five recipes all containing Vegex from Milk Vegex drink and Scotch Broth to Curry Sauce Paprika Goulash and Vegex Caviar. Though "the richest known food in vitamin B" it is noted clearly that "Vegex is food not medicine". A few small spots and two small pinholes to front wrap text clean and otherwise very good. Light toning to text somewhat heavier in places "4" in early hand to head of title page. $850. Only edition. Cook a linen draper and political radical was found guilty of displaying in his shop window a handbill promoting a nailers' strike that accused government ministers of contributing to the starvation of the people. However his punishment was light being bound over for the sum 200 to receive sentence "when called upon." This pamphlet was published by Cook to raise money for his legal expenses. A note at the foot of p. 72 is an appeal for additional financial assistance: "S. Cook will be happy to receive and Subscriptions towards his late expenses and towards such subsequent proceedings as may be deemed requisite."
