An original copper engraving from a painting by William HodgesTaken from Hawkesworth's 1773 account of the voyages of Capt. James Cook Joseph Banks and Capt John Byron. Hodges 1744-1797 joined Cook's second expedition to the South Pacific 1772-1775 as a draughstman. Cook visited Vanuatu in July of 1774. In his judgment the islanders - the Malekulans - were 'the most ugly and ill-proportioned people' he ever saw. Hawkesworth commented that they wore no clothes except a piece of cloth or leaf by which the men tied their penis to their belly. They had wooly short-cropped hair thick lips and very dark complexions and the septum was perforated by a sharp stone. When Hodges painted 'The Landing at Mallicolo' the original of which hangs in the National Martime Museum he adopted what has been described as 'the transitional mode of history painting using the mitigated realism popularized by Benjamin West'. Cook's men are shown in contemporary dress and the islanders are painted to accord with the ethnographic reports but in poses and with gestures whose origin appears to lie in classical statuary thus making them tall and dignified of bearing - a clear contrast with Cook's description of them as being 'ape-like'. This is plate LX appearing opposite page 129. The margins show staining. There is some faint staining to the image and several small closed tears not affecting image. The margins are untrimmed. Map 10.5x8.25in on 12.375x9.75in Sheet; Plate No. 37 uncolored copper engraving; Mild soiling with age toning at fore edge horizontal fold crease. Beddie 1543 and 1714-37 London 1556 Paris. This plan of the entrance to Nootka Sound was surveyed by Roberts and drawn in 1778. It is an important chart of a disputed area between the Great Britain France and Spain and published in the London 1784-85 and Paris editions in 1785. However there is some controversy on the survey sources of the original draft. The 22 year old William Bligh 1754-1817 was the Master on the 'Resolution' and argues that Roberts copied Bligh's surveys and took credit with the Admiralty. Lieutenant Henry Roberts 1756-1796 accompanied Captain Cook on the third voyage of the 'Resolution' and 'Discovery' 1776-1780. This voyage was to the islands of the Pacific Australia the Pacific Northwest America Alaska Kamchatka and Hawaii. In Hawaii Cook was killed in a misunderstanding with the natives at Kealakekua Bay. 17816571781. Copper-line engraving. 180mm by 110mm platemark. John Fothergill FRS 1712 - 1780 was an English physician plant collector philanthropist and Quaker. He is credited with first identifying and naming trigeminal neuralgia in his work Of a painful affection of the face in 1765.<br /> John Fothergill made a study of conchology and botany. At Upton near Stratford he had an extensive botanical garden where he grew many rare plants obtained from various parts of the world now West Ham Park. In the garden with its glasshouses John Coakley Lettsom 1744-1815 a Quaker physician and a protege of his exclaimed that "the sphere seemed transposed as the Arctic Circle joined with the equator". Lettsom published a catalogue of the plants of Fothergill's garden Hortus Uptonensis or a catalogue of the plants in the Dr. Fothergill's garden at Upton at the time of his decease anno 1780.Fothergilla is named in his honour.He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1763.He was the patron of Sydney Parkinson the South Sea voyager and also of William Bartram the American botanist in his Southern travels 1773-1776.One foxing spot. unknown

Captain James Cook made three major voyages to the Pacific. The first voyage with HMS Endeavour from 17681771 was ostensibly made to observe the Transit of Venus but also to search for the mythical Great Southern Continent supposed to lie somewhere between New Holland and South America. Cook became the first European to set foot on New Zealand and named the land New South Wales. During the second voyage with HMS Resolution and Adventure from 17721775 Cook made the first crossing of the Antarctic Circle. In his third and final voyage with HMS Resolution and Discovery from 17761780 Cook became the first European to discover Hawaii and showed that there was no navigable northern passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific. He died during a skirmish with natives in Hawaii. Cook's journals were published after each voyage.
