Two volumes quarto with a folding map and 16 engraved plates some folding; original mottled calf binding. <p><p>Cook's second voyage and travels in South Africa by the famous Swedish naturalist. This is the first edition in French the most profusely illustrated of the early editions of the book. This is an example of the quarto version an octavo version appeared simultaneously. Sparrman professor of zoology at Uppsala University was in South Africa when Cook's second voyage called there in 1772; Forster engaged him to accompany the expedition as assistant naturalist. Though much of his book is a narrative of travels in Africa with emphasis on its flora and fauna and a remarkable series of plates on termites and their habitations he includes an interesting account of his voyage with Cook in the first volume - as Hocken notes "Hairbreadth escape from collision of the two ships not mentioned elsewhere. Shocking details as to the food on board. Described the plants which Georg Forster drew. Both interesting and amusing.".</p> <p>Sparrman published an expanded Swedish version of his account of the voyage in 1802 with a second volume in 1818 but this account in its various versions was the only eighteenth-century text by this member of the second voyage.</p> </p> . chez Buisson unknown

First edition with the imprint changed to 1788 by pen of the Dutch translation of Cook's account of his third and last voyage with an engraved frontispiece depicting Cook's death by the native inhabitants of "Owyhee" Hawaii. Cook 1728-1779 volunteered in 1776 for a third voyage "to investigate the coasts of the north Pacific and to settle once and for all the question of the northwest passage" Howgego. Via Cape of Good Hope Tasmania and New Zealand they reached the Pacific Ocean where they discovered and mapped several islands. They continued sailing north to the west coast of North America. Sailing south again they mapped some islands around Hawaii. After some natives had stolen one of the Discovery's boats Cook came ashore with a small party. The meeting escalated and during retreat Cook was overpowered by some native inhabitants and killed. Clerke gained command and set out to Kamchatka but died along the way and was buried at Petropavlovsk. James King and John Gore were now in command of the two ships and started sailing back to Plymouth.Title-page and engraved frontispiece somewhat smudged some occasional spots and stains but otherwise in good condition. "Faithfully abridged from the quarto edition." An abridged children's version of Captain James Cook's third and final voyage on which he was murdered by natives. The third voyage was undertaken to continue the British survey of the Pacific but most particularly to search for a northwest passage from the western side. Sailing in 1776 the expedition called at Kerguelen Island Tasmania New Zealand and the Cook Tonga and Society islands then sailed north and discovered Christmas Island and the Hawaiian Islands. They then thoroughly explored and charted the Northwest Coast from the Bering Straits along the coast of Alaska and Canada as far south as present northern California. Returning to Hawaii in 1778 the expedition was at first received warmly; but after departing and being forced to return to repair a mast trouble developed which led to a tragic series of events in which the great navigator was killed. Spines have moderate cracking and chipping mild red rot a loss of leather to spine head/tails resulting in exposed endbands all endbands present and missing the black volume number labels. Gilt ruled boards and gilt ornamentation to edges. Boards have cracking to joints moderate rubbing wear minor soiling minor worming chipping to edges and bumping to fore corners resulting in exposed boards. Volume 1 front board is almost fully detached from the spine. Textblock has marbled end papers and the bookplate of Plowden Weston 1821-1864 the 50th Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina on the front pastedowns. Textblock has age toning light plus foxing and soiling to some pages throughout creasing to corners of some pages and bumping to edges. Volume 1 has pencil marks on some pages from page v to 48 and minor yellow discoloration to some fore edges of pages from the front free end page to page 66. Volume 2 bound in book 1 is missing the top corner of page 96 and has moderate foxing to pages 62-82. Volume 3 bound in book 2 has very small tears to the top edges of pages 211-214. The official account of Cook's second voyage and the only account of any of his voyages written by Cook himself a wide margined copy. The main objective of the 2nd voyage was to circumnavigate the world as far south as possible in search of the Great Southern Land. In doing so the Resolution & Adventure became the first ships to cross the Antarctic circle in January 1773. <br /> <br /> Cook crossed the Antarctic Circle twice more and achieved the 71 degrees S a record that was to last for 50 years. On this voyage Cook pioneered the use of sauerkraut as a dietary supplement to prevent scurvy. He succeeded losing only four of his 112 man crew and none from scurvy. This was regarded as a great maritime feat on its own. <br /> <br /> During this voyage Cook played his part in furthering the great longitude debate. An accurate way to determine longitude had long been a goal of all seafaring nations. English clock maker John Harrison was a mechanical genius who invented a clock that would carry the true time from home port thereby enabling the calculation of the ships' longitude. Cook carried four watches with him the principal one named "K-1" which he frequently complimented in the log of the Resolution calling it "our trusty friend the Watch" and "our never failing guide the Watch." With its help he made the firsthand highly accurate charts of many newly discovered South Pacific islands. <br /> <br /> 4to 28.5 cms high 2 volumes a wide margined copy COMPLETE with 64 engraved plates and maps. The first edition of this highly influential first English biography of Cook by the Anglican clergyman Kippis one of the leading biographers of his day. In addition to describing the three great voyages in depth Kippis also deals with Cook's earlier experiences including his duties aboard the Mercury during the siege of Quebec and his Newfoundland and Labrador surveys. Most of Samwell's narrative of Cook's death is included as well.<br/>While Kippis did not appear to be entirely insensitive to the long-term effects of European contact with Pacific peoples he championed Cook's humanitarian cultural and intellectual mission in the circumnavigation of the globe. In a study of European exploration of the Pacific Lynne Withey concluded that this volume by Kippis became a prominent justification for the involvement of Europeans in the Pacific islands for years after Cook's death Withey 406-407. <br/>The second appendix includes "The Moral an Ode" by the British poet novelist and religious dissenter Helen Maria Williams an old family friend of Kippis. Image measures 15 1/2" x 26 1/2"<br/> <br/> This important and scarce 1794 map of the North Pacific covers the northwest coast of America including Alaska east as far as the Hudson Bay and the northeast coast of Asia including Kamchatka. The map is from the second edition of the official account of Captain James Cook's Third Voyage in the HMS Revolution between 1778 and 1779. The route of his journey is depicted in detail with depth soundings noted along the route. Several Capes islands and bays are labeled. This map is among the first to accurately map the coastlines of the region.<br> <br> It was during this voyage that Cook encountered an 'impenetrable wall of ice' in the Arctic as he searched for the Northwest Passage thus putting to rest the hopes for the discovery of an Arctic Northwest Passage. Map was engraved by T. Harmer for the official account of Cook's voyages. The map is in excellent condition. Minor creasing near original centerfold. Sea of the West is creatively inserted in the lower right border and noted over time. Indigenous tribes are noted in North America.<br> <BR> Captain Cook 1728 -1779 was among the most famous and important explorer navigator cartographer and captain of his time whose scientific and geographical knowledge influenced his successors well into the 20th century. He started sailing as a teenager and went on to join the Royal Navy in 1755. In 1766 he was commissioned to explore the Pacific and went on the sail thousands of miles across largely uncharted regions of the world. These three historic voyages led him to some of the first sightings of Antarctica his discovery of many Polynesian islands including the Hawaiian Islands first European contact with east Australia the circumnavigation of New Zealand and the first correct mapping of the Pacific Northwest. William Faden 1750-1836 was an 18th century English cartographer engraver mapseller and publisher as well as 'Geographer to His Majesty & to his H.R.H. the Prince of Wales George III & George IV.
