Contemporary inscription on front flyleaf. Internally clean. In a custom clamshell box. First edition of the first Cuban cook book published in English. Blanche Zacharie de Baralt 1865-1950 was born in New York; she married Luis Alejandro Baralt y Peoli in 1886 and the couple moved to his native Cuba in 1900. She earned a PhD in philosophy from the University of Havana in 1902 and went on to translate the poetry of Tagore and to write a book on Jose Marti. She also published this volume which was clearly geared toward the tourist market with the introduction emphasizing the idea of taking home the tastes of one's holiday abroad. Each chapter heading has an illustration and these were drawn by Federico Edelmann and Conrad W. Massaguer the one above the section for beans appears to show a cowboy riding along in a cloud of gas. Notably this work contains several important Cuban cocktails including the first appearance of the mojito referred to here as a Rum Cocktail or Cuban Mojo. Rare in the true first edition. unknown

London: Peter Parker 1679. iv 24 pp. Period quarter calf and marbled paper boards<br/> <br/> An important early English treatise on forestry and designed woodland here in the 1679 issue with the rare addition of Plattes's tract on mines and minerals.<br/> <br/> Cook was gardener to the Earl of Essex at Cassiobury Park near Watford and laid out many woodland walks and avenues including reputedly an avenue of 296 lime trees. Cook wrote from practical experience as gardener to Arthur Capell first Earl of Essex at Cassiobury Park near Watford one of the notable Restoration landscapes outside London. His treatise treats trees both as productive estate assets and as elements of design giving directions for raising transplanting pruning grafting and ordering forest and fruit trees as well as for planting. The engraved plates and accompanying rules for measuring land and timber show the book's practical range joining arboriculture surveying estate management and landscape design. The work reflects a moment when English country-house landscapes were increasingly shaped through ordered planting axial walks avenues and managed woodland. Cook's association with Cassiobury gives the book particular interest: he is traditionally credited with laying out woodland walks and avenues there including a celebrated avenue of lime trees. His manual preserves the working knowledge behind such improvements before the broader eighteenth-century shift toward more naturalistic landscape gardening. The appended Plattes tract broadens the volume from woodland and estate improvement to the useful exploitation of natural resources. A Discovery of Subterranean Treasure gives practical directions for locating mines and minerals and for melting refining and assaying ores from gold to coal. Plattes an experimental writer on agriculture and practical science wrote for readers interested in applicable knowledge rather than scholastic theory. Bound with Cook's forestry manual the two works form a compact volume on improvement above and below ground: the ordering of trees woods and avenues followed by the discovery and testing of mineral wealth.<br/> <br/> Fussell pp.39-40; Henrey 39; Kress 1483; Wing C6033; Hoover 232. For his edition Beaglehole sought out the various surviving holographs in Cook's own hand in preference to copies by his clerks on board ship and others. <br /><br />As well as Cook's own journals Beaglehole also printed either entire or in lengthy extracts the journals of several of Cook's colleagues on the voyages. The introductions themselves together with copious footnotes reveal the breadth of his erudition. Octavo in dark blue-green cloth with spine lettered in gilt. 205 pp. plus index at rear. 11 plates including frontis and one large folding map tipped in at rear. A tight very good example some spotting to the spine strip and minor wear at the spine extremities. Occasional light foxing to the text as is usual. One of the scarcest and most sought after New Jersey historical volume. Part I describes the physical and geological description of Cape May County its geological age and formation. Part II is "Economical Geology" analyses of soils marsh mud forests agriculture fish and fish by-products building material substances particularly brick salt. The second major portion of the work consists of "Catalogues of Zoological And Botanical Productions of the County of Cape May" that includes lists of the larger wild animals of the county opossums bears raccoons skunk fox squirrels rabbits deer etc.; birds native to the county including bald eagles geese various hawks owls swallows fly-catchers and smaller birds.; fishes black fish mackerel dories catfish mudfish pike flounder herring turbot sole eels shark; plants marine algae. There is an engraving of a Venus Mercenaria with descriptive paragraphs of that fossil and the Buccinum Obsoletum. This progress Hogarth's last is based on the disorderly riotous Oxfordshire election of 1754 in which the Duke of Marlborough a Whig "the New Interest" challenged the entrenched Tories "the Old Interest" in the established stronghold of the latter party. Aimed at the upper middle and upper classes this series shows the cynicism of the aristocratic class toward electoral politics and delineates their attempted manipulation of the populace. It depicts politicians of both parties using slogans flattery bribery alcohol food and trinkets to expoit the population in the interests of their own undemocratic ambitions. It exposes both parties as exciting the most degrading proclivities of the least able sections of the electorate the poor the simpleminded the maimed the dying to produce a violence and an anarchy that ultimately envelops all and threatens the very ambitions they sought to satisfy. Moderate wear; boards edges and joints well rubbed; crackling to the leather on the spine; text block top edges dusted; previous owner's ink inscription to the front pastedown and title page; mild offset throughout; folding plates backed with linen. Very good. Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. The British Admiralty claimed the rights to publish any material which had been generated on its ships during its missions of exploration and were generally scrupulous about depriving the seamen on board of their journals whenever they returned to port. The publication of Cooks' narrative of his Third Voyage - notoriously cut short by his death in Hawaii - was seen as a lucrative means of recouping monies spent upon the enterprise; an eager public keen to read of his exploits were not about to prove them wrong. Not everybody could afford to pay the sums expected to purchase the work however and few wanted to deal with its quarto format with accompanying maps so the enterprising George Kearsley publisher saw his way clear to producing an abridged smaller format version which suited the market admirably. The Admiralty were not so keen to see funds diverted away from them like this and entered into a battle of words with the canny publisher. As a result the Preface to the volume is both a long apology and an explanation as to Kearsley's altruistic reasons for publishing it. Possibly due to the acrimony surrounding the publication the main bibliographer of works by and about Cook Beddie overlooked the second edition in his listings this is the fourth. The book is of interest also for the fact that it reproduces the Royal Society Medal presented to Cook post-mortem - designed by Pingo and engraved here by Trotter - and goes into a fair amount of detail about this award.
