First edition 8vo pp. 8 444; stipple-engraved frontispiece portrait large engraved tailpiece on p. 8 woodcut tailpiece at the end; original blue paper-covered boards cream paper shelfback printed paper label on spine; overall soiling label darkened; all else very good sound and internally clean. From the Britannica: "Macklin first appeared as an actor at Bristol and in 1725 went to Lincoln's Inn Fields London. A man of violent nature he was a pioneer against the stilted declamation of his day. He went to Drury Lane Theatre in 1733 and later was concerned in its management. In 1735 he killed another actor in the greenroom over a dispute about a wig but although prosecuted he received no sentence. He set the seal on his stage career at Drury Lane on Feb. 14 1741 when he played Shylock rescuing the part from the broad comedy with which it had long been surrounded. Macklin played many parts with distinction but was constantly involved in disputes and lawsuits. He attempted to be a restaurateur but failed and returned to the stage. Two of his plays were outstanding Love à la mode 1759 and The Man of the World 1781. At the time of his death he claimed to be 107 years old; he may have been a centenarian but this is subject to dispute. Publisher's pastel-blue flecked buckram boards with red leather label to the spine lettered in gilt. 198 pages. Frontispiece and many other line illustrations by J E Laboureur full page in text and as chapter vignettes and end pieces. A near fine copy in a VG dustwrapper which has a hint of tanning to the spine and creasing/fraying and a closed tear at the head of the spine neatly repaired/reinforced historically to the verso. An interesting chart of the north-eastern coast of Australia discovered by Cook in 1770 showing the Endeavour River and the Endeavour Strait so named by Cook after his ship was careened and repaired on the banks of the river following grounding on a coral reef offshore the site of present day Cooktown. From an early French edition of Cook's Voyages vol. IV plate 3. Copper engraving. Good condition some offset and a little browning to left of central fold. Later colour.
